Fulshear Launches Youth Advisory Commission to Empower Teen Voices in Local Government
The City of Fulshear has announced an exciting opportunity for local teens to shape their community’s future through the launch of the Fulshear Youth Advisory Commission (YAC). This new initiative aims to bring high school students into the heart of local government, giving them a platform to express their perspectives and actively contribute to civic life.
A Voice for Fulshear’s Next Generation
The Youth Advisory Commission was established by Ordinance No. 2025-1492, recently approved by the City Council, as part of a broader effort to increase youth engagement and leadership in municipal affairs. The mission of YAC is to create a structured space where students can both learn about the inner workings of city governance and advocate for the concerns and interests of their peers.
Applicants who are accepted to the YAC will provide input on youth services and programming, assist with city events and volunteer efforts, and compile an annual report to reflect the commission's progress. In essence, these student members will serve as a bridge between Fulshear’s youth and city leadership.
The Value of Youth in Local Government
Research consistently supports the value of youth engagement in civic roles. According to a study by the Center for Information & Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE), youth who are involved in local government initiatives are more likely to vote, volunteer, and remain civically engaged as adults. CIRCLE also found that youth participation in local decision-making processes enhances their sense of belonging and confidence in public institutions.
Moreover, the National League of Cities reports that cities benefit from youth advisory boards by gaining fresh perspectives, increasing intergenerational understanding, and building more inclusive community policies. Programs like YAC not only help teens develop leadership and communication skills but also encourage accountability, empathy, and long-term civic responsibility.
