Freeman High School Softball Team Earns Statewide Recognition for Community Service

January 28 2025

In just its inaugural season, Freeman High School’s softball team has made a lasting impact on its community, earning statewide recognition with the 2025 Grant Teaff Beyond the Game Team Award. This prestigious award, given annually by the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, honors one high school team for its outstanding contributions to service beyond the field, and Freeman High School is the sole recipient this year.

Opened in August 2024, Freeman High School is Katy ISD’s 10th high school campus. Named in honor of the Freeman family, who were passionate about service, the school has embraced these values wholeheartedly. The Grant Teaff Beyond the Game Team Award is a reflection of the school’s commitment to the Freeman legacy of giving back to the community.

“This award reflects our Freeman High School GOLD standard,” said Gina Cobb, Principal of Freeman High School. “Through opportunities for service and leadership, our students and staff are determined to make a difference in our community. Congratulations to Coach Jill Voss and our softball team for this amazing achievement and for modeling how our entire school can ‘be above.’”

The team’s commitment to service was evident throughout the year, as they dedicated countless hours to volunteer efforts. From packing Thanksgiving boxes for families in need to placing flags on veterans’ graves at the Houston National Cemetery, the team worked together to support local initiatives. Their holiday spirit was also evident when they adopted a child through Katy Christian Ministries' Santa’s Sleigh, ensuring that a child in need received gifts for the holiday season.

As a coach, Jill Voss has watched her players grow not just as athletes but as leaders in their community. “Our culture encourages student-athletes to give back, allowing them to grow as young women and become better sisters, daughters, teammates, and human beings,” Voss said. “Each project helps these young ladies become better servant leaders and understand the true meaning of service over self.”

The Grant Teaff Beyond the Game Team Award is supported by the Grant Teaff Foundation and the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, in partnership with the Texas High School Coaches Association and other state organizations. The award includes a $5,000 grant for the team, and the Texas Sports Hall of Fame will honor them at the 2025 induction banquet, a celebration of sportsmanship and community spirit across the state.

The Freeman High School softball team’s achievement is a testament to the power of community, teamwork, and service. While they may have just begun their journey, these young women have already proven that they are more than just athletes—they are leaders who understand the importance of making a difference in the lives of others.
