Free Workshop in West Houston Connects Families to Maternal and Child Health Resources

January 30 2026

On Friday, January 30, 2026, Harris County families are invited to attend the 4th Annual Maternal & Child Health Education and Outreach Workshop, a free event hosted by Harris County Precinct 4 Commissioner Lesley Briones in partnership with Texas Southern University (TSU). The event takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Steve Radack Community Center, located at 18650 Clay Rd, Houston, TX 77084.

This health-focused community event offers more than education—it delivers action. Attendees will have access to free mammograms (pre-registration required), biometric and blood pressure screenings, immunizations, and vital health services. Mobile medical units will be stationed onsite, offering a convenient and accessible experience for participants. Families will also receive baby supplies such as diapers, formula, and clothing while supplies last.

The annual workshop addresses a pressing need in the region: over 23% of Harris County women report they cannot afford to see a doctor due to cost barriers. By bringing healthcare directly to the community—particularly women and children in underserved areas—the event provides a lifeline of support, bridging socioeconomic and medical gaps with dignity and compassion.

Residents can register for the event and services online at hcp4.info/MaternalChildHealthCareTSU. Lunch is provided, and the event is open to the public.

A Platform for Awareness, Advocacy, and Action

Organizers are emphasizing three pillars throughout the day:

  • Awareness: Expert-led sessions and panel discussions will focus on maternal and child health, offering education on real challenges and proven interventions.
  • Advocacy: Local healthcare systems, federally qualified health centers (FQHCs), and community-based organizations (CBOs) will highlight available services for new and expectant mothers.
  • Action: In addition to no-cost screenings, the event offers 2.0 unaccredited Community Health Worker CE credits, promoting professional development alongside public health education

Community Leaders and Healthcare Experts Unite

The speaker lineup includes some of the region’s most passionate advocates and professionals in maternal and child health. Keynote speaker Dr. Pamela Berens will lead the conversation on improving health outcomes for families, joined by panelists such as:

  • Larianna D. Varnado, MPH, Maternal & Child Health Program Manager at Harris County Public Health
  • Jazmyne Jones, Postdoctoral Fellow in Academia & Health Services at TSU
  • Felicia Latson, LCSW-S, and William Lyons, LCSW-S, who will speak on factors impacting maternal health
  • Ivy Poon, PharmD, and Kimberly Pounds from TSU’s MHREACH program

Additonal contributors include faith leaders, live performers like the TSU Debate Team, and the dedicated MHREACH team who helped organize the event.

A Model of Public-Private Collaboration

Commissioner Lesley Briones, known for her advocacy of equitable healthcare access, continues to demonstrate her commitment through partnerships like this with Texas Southern University. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to deliver high-quality services to those most in need and to ensure that no resident is left behind due to financial, transportation, or informational barriers.

This event stands as a powerful example of what can be achieved when public officials, academic institutions, and community leaders join forces with a shared goal—supporting families and removing barriers to health and wellness. The collaborative spirit behind this initiative reinforces the importance of community-driven solutions that prioritize maternal and child health.

Free parking is available at the venue, and residents can choose to attend in person or participate virtually via Zoom. For more information or assistance, families are encouraged to call 713-313-1233 or email cbmhrcommunity@tsu.edu.
