Free String Concerts Kick Off LSC-CyFair’s Instrumental Entertainment Season
Lone Star College-CyFair announces the fall instrumental season of entertainment starting with free performances including the Mud Turtle Quintet’s “Latin Fire” and the Carya String Quartet’s “Breath of Air” concerts.
The Mud Turtle Quintet will perform contemporary composer Maximo Diego Pujol’s “Suite Buenos Aires”, a work inspired by the sounds of Argentinian tango music, Luigi Boccherini’s “Fandango" that incorporates the flamenco sounds of Spain and “Tango en Skai” written by Roland Dyens.
Established in 2016 to present concerts of rarely performed and new works for guitar and string quartet all over Houston and surrounding areas, the Mud Turtle Quintet’s current members include local artists Marc Rosenberg (guitar), Zelda Jones (violin), Lois Geertz (violin), Merit Rogge (viola) and Vyacheslav “Slava” Dobrushkin (cello). Guest cellist Stephen Cook will fill in for Slava for this Oct. 27 “Latin Fire: Dances from South America and Spain” performance.
The Carya String Quartet, the only all-women string quartet in the greater Houston area, will perform Anna Clyne's “Breathing Statues” and Beethoven’s String Quartet in C Major, Op. 59 No. 3 in the Nov. 10 concert.
Striving to create community through performances of new and old chamber music from around the world since 2018, the Carya String Quartet members include Laura Cividino (violin), Claire Gallagher (violin), Rainey Weber (viola) and Hannah Deplazes (cello).
Both of these string concerts are free and will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall (ART 102) located in the Center for the Arts.
LSC-CyFair’s instrumental season continues with several November performances focused on highlighting the talent of student musicians including the Jazz Ensemble Nov. 27, Percussion Ensemble, Nov. 28 and the Symphony Orchestra Nov. 29 all at 7:30 p.m. in the Main Stage Theatre.
