Free Irrigation Evaluations Help Fort Bend Residents Save Water, Protect Lawns and Lower Summer Bills
As summer settles into Fort Bend County, many homeowners are watching the same familiar things: the lawn, the sprinkler schedule and the monthly water bill.
For residents served by participating water providers in the North Fort Bend Water Authority service area, a free program is designed to help with all three. The W.I.S.E. Guys program offers eligible homeowners a no-cost irrigation system evaluation that can identify inefficient watering patterns, controller settings and other issues that may be sending water — and money — down the drain.
The program is especially timely during the hotter months, when outdoor watering often becomes one of the biggest drivers of household water use. For families trying to keep yards healthy without overwatering, the evaluation offers a practical starting point before small irrigation problems become larger expenses.
What the W.I.S.E. Guys Program Offers
The W.I.S.E. Guys program is offered through the North Fort Bend Water Authority and administered by Vepo, L.L.C. on behalf of NFBWA. Homeowners served by participating water providers can sign up for a free, on-site irrigation system evaluation with no strings attached.
During the visit, a licensed irrigator reviews the home’s irrigation system, checking water patterns and the frequency settings on the controller. After the evaluation, residents receive access to their results online, giving them a clearer understanding of how their system is performing and where adjustments may help improve water efficiency in yards and landscaped areas.
The evaluation does not include repairs. However, it gives homeowners useful information they can use to make changes themselves or hire a licensed professional if needed. Residents who want help with repairs or adjustments can search for a Texas licensed irrigator through the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
For many homeowners, that kind of information can make a noticeable difference. One participant, David Gajeski of Cinco MUD No. 3, shared, “WISE Guys helped decrease my water bill by 20% while enhancing the look and health of our lawn and landscape at the same time. Thanks WISE Guys!”
Why It Matters for Fort Bend County
The W.I.S.E. Guys program is more than a household savings tool. It is part of the North Fort Bend Water Authority’s broader effort to conserve water and reduce reliance on groundwater across northern Fort Bend County.
NFBWA was created in 2005 to help local water providers meet groundwater reduction requirements and transition toward alternative water sources. That shift matters because heavy groundwater pumping can contribute to land subsidence, a gradual sinking of the ground that can affect roads, drainage systems, utilities and long-term infrastructure planning.
For residents, the issue can feel technical until it connects back to everyday life: reliable water service, responsible growth, neighborhood drainage, property protection and the long-term resilience of Fort Bend County communities.
NFBWA is working toward a major regional goal of reducing groundwater usage by 60% by 2027, as required through the Fort Bend Subsidence District’s regulatory plan. While large infrastructure projects play a major role in that effort, everyday conservation habits at home also matter — especially outdoor watering during the summer.
A Simple Step Before Water Use Peaks
The free irrigation evaluation gives homeowners a low-pressure way to better understand how their sprinkler system is actually working. A system may look fine from the driveway but still have overspray, uneven coverage, inefficient timing or controller settings that no longer match the season.
For Fort Bend residents, those small adjustments can add up. Using less water outdoors can help lower bills, reduce waste and support the larger regional effort to preserve water resources for future growth.
The program also gives homeowners something many people appreciate: clear, personalized information about their own property. Instead of guessing how long to water or whether a sprinkler zone is working correctly, residents can use the evaluation results to make more informed decisions.
How Residents Can Sign Up
Eligible residents can visit the North Fort Bend Water Authority’s W.I.S.E. Guys page to sign up for a free irrigation system evaluation. The website also includes a participation checker so homeowners can confirm whether their water provider participates in the program.
Residents who are unsure whether they qualify should check the NFBWA coverage information before registering.
As Fort Bend County continues to grow, programs like W.I.S.E. Guys offer a reminder that conservation does not always require a major lifestyle change. Sometimes, it starts with understanding what is already happening in the yard.
For homeowners enduring another hot Texas summer, that knowledge can help protect landscaping, reduce waste and keep more money in the household budget.
