For many medical emergencies, the first person in a position to help is not a paramedic or nurse. It may be a spouse, parent, neighbor or friend standing just a few feet away.

That is the idea behind an upcoming free CPR, First Aid & Stop the Bleed class offered by the Cy-Fair Fire Department, giving Aberdeen Trails residents an opportunity to learn practical emergency-response skills without needing any previous medical experience.

The two-hour class will be held Saturday, September 26, 2026, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Cy-Fair Fire Department Administration, 10710 Telge Road in Houston. Registration is free.

What Residents Will Learn

The class is designed for people with no medical background and will cover hands-only CPR, basic first aid and Stop the Bleed skills — tools that could help someone respond more confidently while waiting for professional emergency crews to arrive.

One important distinction: this is not a CPR certification course, and participants will not receive CPR certification after completing it.

Instead, the focus is on everyday preparedness and helping residents understand what they can do during the first moments of an emergency at home or elsewhere in the community.

That matters because cardiac arrest can happen with little warning. According to information provided with the course, when bystander CPR begins within one minute of cardiac arrest, 22.4% of victims survive to hospital discharge, compared with 4.7% among those who do not receive CPR. Current American Heart Association guidance similarly emphasizes that immediate CPR can double or triple a person's chance of surviving cardiac arrest.

Why Knowing CPR Can Matter Close to Home

Emergency preparedness can feel like something meant for professionals until an emergency happens in a living room, driveway, neighborhood pool or family gathering.

In fact, the American Heart Association reports that most out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in homes or residences, meaning the person who needs immediate help may be someone the bystander knows and loves.

For families in Aberdeen Trails, a free afternoon class offers a relatively small time commitment for skills that could become important when every minute counts.

The addition of Stop the Bleed training also gives participants another practical tool for emergencies involving serious bleeding, while basic first aid instruction can help residents become more comfortable responding to common medical situations until help arrives.
