Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels Returns to Fulshear with New Senior Center Launching June 23

May 28 2025

In a much-anticipated move that blends heartfelt community care with vital senior support services, Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels will officially reopen its senior activity center at the Irene Stern Community Center on June 23, 2025. The revived center, located at 6920 Fulshear Katy Road, marks the return of a beloved local hub where residents aged 60 and up can socialize, stay active, and enjoy nutritious meals—completely free of charge.

The reopening comes after months of collaborative planning between the City of Fulshear and Fort Bend Seniors. Following an April 1, 2025 directive from City Council, city staff and nonprofit leaders finalized a no-cost facility rental agreement that allows Fort Bend Seniors to use the community center Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a full year. The center will offer a wide range of weekday programming from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with meals served daily.

No Barriers, Just Benefits: Meals, Activities & More

Open to all area seniors regardless of income, the center’s programming includes:

  • Daily hot meals and nutrition education
  • Exercise classes
  • Bingo, arts and crafts
  • Health and wellness seminars
  • Round-trip transportation assistance

Participants are required to register in advance to join. Pre-registration will be held at the Irene Stern Community Center on June 12 and 13, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

“This center is more than a place to eat or pass the time,” said Shonda Thomas, Senior Center Manager at Fort Bend Seniors. “It’s a space to build friendships, maintain health, and feel connected. We’re excited to welcome the Fulshear community back.”

The grand reopening was initially slated earlier but was rescheduled for June 23 to allow for new flooring installation and accommodate pre-booked events at the facility.

Community Support Needed: Donations & Volunteers Welcome

To ensure the center’s success, Fort Bend Seniors has launched an Amazon Wish List for much-needed supplies. Community members can also help by volunteering for various roles—from delivering Meals on Wheels to hosting donation drives and helping out at the center. A new “Training Wheels Program” even allows prospective volunteers to shadow experienced drivers before committing to a delivery route.

“We serve over 2,300 seniors annually in Fort Bend and Waller counties,” said Doug Simpson, Executive Director of Fort Bend Seniors. “Many of them rely on us not just for food, but for daily human interaction. These centers are lifelines.”

The nonprofit is urging local residents to get involved, especially as federal uncertainty continues to cast shadows over funding for aging services. According to Simpson, while Fort Bend Seniors remains committed to serving the community no matter what, local engagement has never been more crucial.

A Safe Haven for Fulshear’s Growing Senior Population

With Fort Bend County's senior population nearing 101,000, and roughly 10% living at or below the poverty line, the reopening of this senior center could not come at a better time. The U.S. is on track for seniors to outnumber children by 2034, making resources like the Irene Stern Community Center in Fulshear increasingly vital.

The City of Fulshear’s partnership with Fort Bend Seniors ensures that area seniors will once again have a place to gather, grow, and thrive. From hot meals to heartfelt connections, the center aims to offer a renewed sense of belonging and care.
