Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels Celebrates 50 Years of Service to Local Seniors

January 10 2024

This year, the Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels reached a remarkable milestone, celebrating 50 years of invaluable service to local seniors. Providing nutritious meals and essential services to many seniors in the area with a smile and heart of service, this organization has been a pillar of community spirit through compassionate support of thousands of seniors across Fort Bend County and beyond over the last five decades.

As one of Fort Bend County’s oldest non-profit organizations, Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels was formed in 1974 by community leaders, providing 20,000 hot meals during their first year of service. For many seniors, their support is a lifeline. In 2022, Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels served 364,680 meals throughout the year, supporting a total of 2,201 seniors. According to the organization, 36% of seniors live alone, and 20% of the seniors they serve our veterans or spouses of veterans.

To commemorate this 50-year anniversary milestone, the organization is hosting two major fundraising events to kick off their golden anniversary. These events are not your ordinary gatherings; they are a blend of fun, games, and community participation that embodies the essence of Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels. One of the highlights is the Designer Bag Bingo, a creative twist on the classic game, scheduled for Leap Day, February 29, 2024 from 6:00 to 9:30 PM. The community is invited to enjoy an evening filled with laughter, camaraderie, and the chance to win designer handbags from renowned brands like Kate Spade, Dooney & Burke, and even a grand finale prize of a stunning Louis Vuitton bag!

The event will take place at the Bud O’Shieles Community Center located at 1330 Band Rd, Rosenberg, TX 77471. As the hub of many community activities, this center holds a special place in the history of Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels. The event promises more than just an exciting evening; it offers an opportunity to contribute to a noble cause and support the organization in its mission to serve our senior community.

On March 16, 2024, Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels will host their 2nd Annual Walk for Seniors & Wellness Fair. This event celebrates the well-being of seniors and their families with a scenic walk around the pond at the beautiful Sugar Land Memorial Park's Main Pavilion. Alongside the walk, a Wellness Fair will provide access to vital health screenings, resources, and information. Participants are invited to walk with friends, as an individual or part of a team.

Beyond promoting physical activity and well-being, this walk holds historical significance. It commemorates the day when President Nixon signed an amendment to the Older Americans Act on March 22, 1972, which paved the way for a national nutrition program for seniors aged 60 and over. This pivotal legislation has played a vital role in shaping the services provided by organizations like Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels.

Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels warmly invites the community to participate in these events, not only to celebrate this remarkable 50-year journey but also to support the continued service to our seniors. Together, let us honor tradition, promote health, and strengthen the bonds of our community.
