Fort Bend Junior Service League Donates Delivery Van to Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels

February 28 2023

This month, the Fort Bend Junior Service League donated a new delivery van to Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels (FBS). This van will help volunteers donate meals to home-bound seniors in need throughout Fort Bend and Waller Counties. Home-delivered meals include one hot meal daily, Monday through Wednesday, plus one hot meal and three frozen meals on Thursday for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

According to FBS, meals provided to seniors in need meet at least 1/3 of the recommended daily allowance of all nutrients required by adults for five or more days per week to seniors who are homebound. This program provides a vital lifeline to the nearly 10% of seniors in Fort Bend County who are prevented from working and live at or below the poverty level. With a large and growing population of citizens aged 60 years and above, Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels currently provides services to 1.2% of this group of citizens, continually expanding their reach to help seniors in the area who need assistance.

The donation was made possible thanks to funds generated at the annual Sugar Plum Market, hosted by the Fort Bend Junior Service League (FBJSL). Held November 3 through 5 in 2022, the 21st Annual Sugar Plum Market raised $352,000 with nearly 6,000 shoppers returning to shop from over 105 vendors. The proceeds raised allows the Fort Bend Junior Service League to give back to the community,  raising over $4.1 million for the Fort Bend County community since its inception in 2001.

FBJSL is an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism, to developing the potential of women and to improving the Fort Bend County community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable as well as providing an atmosphere of friendliness, goodwill and camaraderie for all members. To date, FBJSL has raised over $5 million dollars in grants and scholarships for charitable 501(c)(3) organizations and individuals in our community. Over the lifetime of the League, their members have worked tirelessly to provide over 400,000 uncompensated volunteer hours to Fort Bend County.
