Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office Now Accepting Applications for 2025 Citizens Police Academy

The Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office is offering a unique chance for community members to get an in-depth look at law enforcement through its Citizens Police Academy, which will begin in January 2025. This free, 11-week program is designed for anyone interested in learning more about the criminal justice system, whether you’re a potential future law enforcement professional or simply curious about the workings of your local sheriff’s department. The Citizens Police Academy will run from January 16, 2025, through March 27, 2025. The program consists of two-hour classes, held weekly on Thursdays from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Gus George Law Enforcement Academy, located at 1521 Eugene Heimann Circle in Richmond, Texas, directly across from the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center. This program is open to residents 18 years and older, and is completely free of charge.

Participants in the program will gain a comprehensive overview of law enforcement operations, learning about the various divisions within the Sheriff’s Office, including Patrol, Criminal Investigations, Detention, the 9-1-1 Emergency Communications Center, Law Enforcement Training, and Narcotics. Additionally, attendees will have the opportunity to tour the Sheriff’s Office and gain practical, hands-on experience through interactive classroom sessions and activities.
The goal of the Citizens Police Academy is to educate the community about how the criminal justice system functions and to offer a closer look at the day-to-day operations of the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office. The program also serves as an introduction to law enforcement careers for those who may be considering entering the field.
Applications for the 2025 Citizens Police Academy are open through January 6, 2025, at 5 p.m. The program will accept only 35 qualified participants, and admission is on a first-come, first-served basis. To be eligible, applicants must be at least 18 years old and must not have a criminal arrest record. A criminal history report may be generated before acceptance into the program, and final admission is at the discretion of the Sheriff.
