Fort Bend County MUD No. 50 Shares Importance of Household Hazardous Waste Disposal

June 19 2024

Ever wonder what you should do with leftover paint, bad batteries, pool chemicals, cell phones and other household hazardous waste? The Fort Bend County MUD No. 50, your municipal utility district, shares insight and solutions!

What are Household Hazardous Wastes (HHW)?

Household hazards wastes are common items you might have in your home or garage that may be harmful to the environment, humans, or wildlife. See the examples listed below.

Examples of HHW:

  • Paint

  • Antifreeze

  • Lawn Chemicals

  • Batteries

  • Used Oil

  • Pool Chemicals

  • Drain Cleaners

  • Fuels

  • Bleach

  • Mercury Thermo- meters

  • Fluorescent Lights

  • Cell Phones

  • Old Computers

Why Can’t I Just Throw HHW Out or Pour It Down The Drain?

If you throw HHW out it may leak and harm groundwater. If you pour HHW down the toilet or sink they may pass through the MUD’s wastewater treatment plant and harm our bayous, our community, and the environment. If you pour HHW down the storm sewer drain, they will flow directly to our bayous and will definitely harm our bayous and community!

Proper disposal of HHW keeps our community safe and healthy!

Be Smart with HHW

Here are some tips when buying and using HHW:

  • Look for words like toxic, flammable, danger, etc. on the label to identify potential hazards.
  • Only buy what you will use immediately.
  • Always check for less toxic alternatives to products.
  • More is not always better - read the label for recommended amounts.
  • Follow the instructions for proper storage and disposal.
  • Do not mix products of pour down the drain.
