Fort Bend County Libraries Recognized with Prestigious Achievement of Library Excellence Award
Fort Bend County Libraries (FBCL) has been recognized by the Texas Municipal Library Directors Association (TMLDA) with the 2024 Achievement of Library Excellence Award. This distinction is awarded to libraries that demonstrate exceptional service, programming, and outreach, placing FBCL among the top 102 public libraries in Texas out of 542 statewide.
To qualify for the award, libraries must meet rigorous criteria across ten categories, including literacy initiatives, workforce development, digital inclusion, community collaboration, and cultural programming. FBCL was recognized for a variety of outstanding services, such as its Teacher in the Library program, which provides educational support at the Mission Bend and Missouri City branches, and its Lawyer in the Library service, which offers free legal assistance at the Fort Bend County Willie Melton Law Library.

The library system’s partnerships with The George Foundation, The Live Oak Playhouse, and Houston Grand Opera’s Opera to Go program also contributed to its distinction. Additionally, FBCL collaborated with Fort Bend County Homeland Security and Emergency Management to serve as a vital resource during emergencies, including providing cooling centers during Hurricane Beryl.
FBCL’s commitment to diversity and literacy was another key factor in receiving the award. The library system hosts cultural events such as a Multicultural Festival, Lunar New Year celebrations, Hispanic Heritage Month programs, and Black History Month events. Literacy initiatives, including ESL Conversation Circles and early-literacy programs like the Summer Reading Challenge, provide essential educational resources for residents of all ages. The library also offers online practice tests for GED exams, U.S. citizenship, SAT preparation, and career certifications, further supporting lifelong learning.
The award also recognized FBCL’s efforts to improve accessibility, including the development of a system-wide ADA-compliant Style Guide to ensure inclusivity across social media, promotional materials, and programming.
