Find Your Furever Valentine: Adopt a Pet from Bexar County Animal Care This Valentine’s Day

February 06 2026

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, love is already in the air — and at Bexar County Animal Care, it’s waiting on four legs. As the county’s only shelter serving animals from the unincorporated areas of Bexar County, the facility plays a quiet but vital role in protecting both people and pets, while offering dogs and cats a path to a new beginning through adoption.

Located at 5510 Duffek Drive in Kirby, TX, just behind the fire station and near the City of Kirby Animal Shelter, Bexar County Animal Care houses up to 60 dogs at a time. These animals come from situations of abandonment, neglect, or abuse, and each one arrives with the same hope — to find a safe, loving home.

A Shelter That Serves the Whole Community

Established in late 2013, Bexar County Animal Care supports public safety by responding to loose animals that may pose a threat to health or human life in unincorporated areas of the county. A small but dedicated team — a manager and five staff members — provides care for the animals 365 days a year, ensuring they are fed, sheltered, and treated with compassion while they wait for adoption.

For residents who believe their pet may have been picked up, the Intake team can be reached at 210-209-5687. To report stray dogs in unincorporated Bexar County, Animal Control Dispatch is available at 210-335-9000. Suspected animal cruelty cases are handled by the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office at 210-335-6000 (option 1).

Why Valentine’s Day Is the Perfect Time to Adopt

While chocolates and flowers fade, the love of a rescued pet lasts a lifetime. Valentine’s Day offers a meaningful reminder that companionship doesn’t have to come wrapped in a box — sometimes it’s waiting in a kennel, tail wagging, ready to become someone’s constant.

Adopting from Bexar County Animal Care not only changes the life of the animal, but also helps create space for the next one in need. It’s a simple act with a ripple effect across the community.

What the Adoption Process Includes

The shelter’s adoption process is designed to create lasting, compatible matches between pets and families. Prospective adopters are asked to complete a brief online application, with staff following up within 24 to 48 hours. Applications help ensure the best fit for both the animal and the household.

Adoption fees are $60 for cats and $125 for dogs, and they include spay or neuter surgery, microchipping, heartworm testing (and treatment if needed), age-appropriate vaccinations, and treatment for internal and external parasites — a significant value and peace of mind for new pet parents.

To adopt, applicants must be at least 18 years old with valid ID, have the consent of all adults in the household, and understand that the shelter reserves the right to refuse an application if it’s not in the animal’s best interest.

Responsible Pet Ownership Matters

Bexar County Animal Care also emphasizes responsible pet ownership, including up-to-date rabies vaccinations, leash laws, and regulations designed to protect both animals and the public. These guidelines help keep neighborhoods safe and ensure pets live healthier, more secure lives.

As Valentine’s Day approaches, Bexar County Animal Care encourages residents to consider a different kind of love story — one that starts with adoption and grows into years of loyalty, comfort, and companionship. Sometimes, the best Valentine is the one who’s been waiting patiently all along.
