Feel the Art: Pearl Fincher Museum Delivers a Sensory-Filled Summer of Creativity in Spring

July 15 2025

This summer, the Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts invites Greater Houston families to engage with art in an entirely new way—by touching it.

Running through August 30, 2025, the Pearl’s Main Gallery features Art Unleashed: Creativity You Can FEEL!, a groundbreaking, family-friendly art exhibition designed to be inclusive for all abilities, including visitors who are blind or have low vision. Admission is always free, and the experience promises to be as meaningful as it is memorable.

Art You Can Feel — Literally

Curated by the Pearl Fincher Museum staff, Art Unleashed is more than an art exhibit—it’s a sensory journey. With a vibrant blend of textures, materials, and interactive installations, this never-before-seen exhibition showcases tactile artworks created by artists from across the nation, many of whom designed pieces specifically for this experience.

A centerpiece of the exhibit is the work of Dallas-based artist Tomas Bustos, who recreates famous masterpieces like The Starry Night, Mona Lisa, and Girl with a Pearl Earring as bronze reliefs. These pieces are designed to be touched, offering a rare opportunity for guests—especially those who are visually impaired—to experience iconic art through their fingertips.

Other highlights include:

  • The playful “Holdables” soft sculptures by Stephanie Metz of California
  • “In a Dish,” a colorful tufted series by Sam Lao of Dallas, who gained fame with Meow Wolf’s “The Real Unreal”
  • Bold, textured paintings from Baltimore artist Rosy Sunshine Galvan
  • Bronze sculptures from Bastrop’s Found Fine Art
  • Fiber art from the whimsical “Weird Plants” series by Marsha Borden of Connecticut

The exhibition also features a Maker Space, generously sponsored by the AAUW North Harris County Branch. Here, visitors of all ages can create their own art using sensory materials such as pipe cleaners, buttons, and pom-poms—an ideal hands-on outlet for young children, families, and adults alike.

Summer Closing Family Day — August 23

To cap off the summer experience, the Pearl Fincher Museum will host Summer Closing Family Day on Saturday, August 23, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. The free event celebrates the final days of Art Unleashed with family-friendly festivities including:

  • A performance by Mad About Hoops at 11:00 AM
  • Balloon animals
  • Interactive art activities
  • And more surprises for kids and adults

A Walk Through a Storybook in the Cole Gallery

While the Main Gallery delights the senses, the Cole Gallery offers a visual and imaginative treat with The Realm of Smaller Things: A Storybook Adventure by Kent Knowles. Based on Knowles’ own children’s book, this exhibit immerses visitors in a giant forest where they explore life from the perspective of a tiny friend. The immersive installation includes whimsical murals, sculptures, and fun photo opportunities—perfect for families seeking an engaging art-and-literature experience.

Like Art Unleashed, this exhibition is on view through August 30, 2025, and is free to the public during museum hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

More Ways to Make Art This Summer

In addition to its summer exhibitions, the Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts offers a lineup of enriching programs that serve the Spring and Cypress communities.

Summer Art Camp

Available through August 1, these camps offer half-day and full-day sessions for ages 5 to 12. Taught by guest artists, campers explore themes such as LEGO® Brick Club, All About Texture, Comic and Character Design, and Fantasy and Digital Art. Registration and course details are available at pearlmfa.org

Wild Art Wednesdays

Every Wednesday from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, families can participate in free drop-in art activities. Space is limited and requires registration for a 20-minute time slot on the museum’s website.

Creating Together: A Dementia-Friendly Program

Partnering with the Houston Alzheimer’s Association, the Pearl hosts Creating Together—a special art program designed for people with early-onset dementia and their caregivers. The next session will be held on Monday, July 21, from 11:00 AM to noon, offering a 30-minute tour followed by a hands-on craft. A Cultural Gem in Northwest Houston

As the only fine arts museum in Harris County located outside of Houston’s city center, the Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts has long served as a cultural anchor for Spring, Cypress, and surrounding areas. Located at 6815 Cypresswood Dr, Spring, TX 77379, the Pearl is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with free admission year-round. Visitors are encouraged to support the museum through donations or membership to help sustain its impactful programming.
