FBI Honors Katy Christian Ministries with National Award for Lifesaving Crisis Work

May 12 2025

In a powerful ceremony filled with emotion and gratitude, the FBI recently honored Katy Christian Ministries (KCM) with the 2024 FBI Director’s Community Leadership Award, spotlighting the nonprofit’s extraordinary efforts to care for some of the most vulnerable members of the Katy and West Houston communities.

The award was presented by Special Agent in Charge Douglas Williams to Makia Walls, director of KCM’s Crisis Center, at the FBI Houston office. The moment marked national recognition for an organization that has quietly served thousands of families with grace, strength, and a deep sense of mission for over four decades.

“In the darkest moments—when victims face threats, violence, and unimaginable trauma—Katy Christian Ministries steps in not just with services, but with unwavering compassion and dignity,” said Williams. “They are a lifeline to those who need it most, and today we honor their extraordinary commitment to our community.”

From Church Roots to Crisis Responders

Katy Christian Ministries began in 1984 as a humble collaboration among nine local churches determined to help neighbors in crisis. Today, that seed of faith has grown into a powerful safety net backed by more than 65 churches, businesses, and community partners.

The organization now offers a wide network of life-changing support: emergency financial assistance, a food pantry, social services, resale stores, and a state-of-the-art Crisis Center that has become a trusted partner for law enforcement agencies, including the FBI.

“This award is a true testament to the strength, dedication, and compassion of our entire Crisis Center Team,” said Walls. “Every day, they show up with heart, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to those we serve.”

Over the past two years, FBI Houston has referred numerous victims of violence and exploitation to KCM, relying on the organization to provide care that goes far beyond the basics.

Among the cases that left lasting impact:
  • A mother facing threats from her abusive ex-husband, who planned to abduct their child to Afghanistan, found legal advocacy, emergency shelter, and police protection through KCM.
  • A cancer patient victimized by organized crime was given safe housing, medical continuity, and a secure alias identity to rebuild her life.
  • A sexual assault survivor received trauma-informed, culturally sensitive support, including transportation to therapy and full assistance in her native language.

These are not just case files to KCM—they are people, often in crisis, who are met with compassion and a sense of sacred responsibility.

More Than Services: A Ministry of Presence

While KCM delivers critical services like rent assistance, food distribution, and shelter, it’s the organization’s human-centered approach that leaves the deepest mark. Every staff member and volunteer is driven by the belief that no one should face hardship alone—and it’s that philosophy that has earned them the trust of survivors and the respect of law enforcement alike.

Through their resale stores, the nonprofit raises funds to support its services while also providing low-cost household goods to local families. Meanwhile, their Crisis Center—one of the few in the region offering such comprehensive care—provides counseling, advocacy, and emergency planning for those escaping violence or abuse.

"Their work transforms fear into safety and isolation into support,” Williams said. “Through their partnership with FBI Houston and law enforcement partners, KCM staff are not only healing wounds, but also helping us pursue justice.”

A National Spotlight on a Local Hero

The FBI Director’s Community Leadership Award, created in 1990, honors organizations across the country that stand on the front lines of service, justice, and safety. Each year, every FBI field office selects one local group or individual whose work exemplifies courage and integrity.

Last year’s Houston-area recipient was Jennifer Hohman, recognized for her anti-human trafficking leadership. This year, the spotlight turned to KCM—a nonprofit whose greatest successes are often quiet, personal, and unseen.

For KCM, this national recognition is both humbling and affirming.

“I am proud to accept this award on behalf of a team that continues to make a real difference in the lives of others,” Walls said.

As Katy continues to grow, so do the challenges faced by families in crisis. But with KCM at the heart of the community—serving with faith, professionalism, and boundless compassion—there is hope.
