Famous Poets Come to Life at George Memorial Library in Immersive Poetry Experience
In celebration of National Poetry Month, Fort Bend County Libraries’ George Memorial Library is inviting the public to experience poetry like never before. On Saturday, April 26, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, the library will host "Walking in Verse: An Interactive Poetry Experience," a free immersive event where famous poets are brought to life through live performances by actors from The Live Oak Playhouse.
Library visitors will encounter beloved literary figures such as Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, Edgar Allan Poe, William Shakespeare, Phillis Wheatley, Sara Teasdale, Ogden Nash, Beatrix Potter, James Baldwin, and even Mother Goose, all portrayed by local actors. The poets will engage with guests in real-time, reciting their work, sharing insights, and answering questions as if they had stepped out of history.
Performances will be staged throughout the library, with rotating appearances in the lobby and second-floor landing, allowing attendees to engage with different poets throughout the event. Guests are also invited to enjoy Tea Time with the Poets in Room 2A and meet local poet Melissa McEver Huckabay, who will be on hand to connect with attendees and share her own work.

The event is produced in partnership with The Live Oak Playhouse, a nonprofit community theater based in Missouri City. Known for its dedication to arts education and community enrichment, The Live Oak Playhouse brings a diverse ensemble of performers to each production. Under the direction of Stacy A. Bakri, the group has gained recognition for delivering thoughtful and engaging performances that connect with audiences of all ages.
“Walking in Verse” is made possible by the support of the Friends of the George Memorial Library and reflects the library’s mission to promote lifelong learning through innovative and culturally enriching experiences.
As designated by the Academy of American Poets, April is National Poetry Month, a celebration launched in 1996 to recognize poetry’s essential place in culture and everyday life. According to the Academy, the monthlong celebration encourages communities to “highlight the extraordinary legacy and ongoing achievement of American poets,” while making poetry more accessible to the public.
