The Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts is ready to welcome fall, with new exhibitions, special events, and plenty of opportunities for volunteers.
Ode to East Texas: The Art of Lee Jamison
In the Main Gallery this fall, the Pearl is proud to host Ode to East Texas: The Art of Lee Jamison. The exhibition opens to the public on Tuesday, September 26, 2023.
Huntsville artist Lee Jamison spent more than a year traveling the tree-lined passages of East Texas, observing, sketching, and journaling along the way. The result is a rich record of the land, lore and culture of East Texas as viewed through the eyes of an accomplished painter.
As you wander through the gallery you’ll find yourself transported, not merely observing but participating in a sensory expedition. The paintings are a portal, an invitation to wander along sun-dappled trails, see the home of the Caddo tribes that first settled in the area, inhale the earthy scent of pine, and feel the rhythm of life that beats within the heart of East Texas.
Jamison will be at the Pearl for an artist talk and book signing on Saturday, October 7, at 2 p.m. Admission is free but reservations are requested on Eventbrite.com or at pearlmfa.org.

From the Bryan Museum in Galveston, the Pearl’s Cole Gallery will feature José Cisneros: A Colorful World in Black and White this fall. The exhibition opens to the public on Tuesday, September 26, 2023.
Cisneros was born in Mexico in 1910, but his family lost their home during the Mexican Revolution. He moved to the United States when he was 15, and his lifetime passion for illustrating history left an indelible mark, winning him many awards. President George W. Bush collected Cisnero’s work, and awarded him the National Humanities Medal in 2002. Cisneros was also knighted by Pope John Paul II in 1990, and by King Juan Carlos of Spain in 1991.
With a focus on the rugged and iconic horsemen of Texas, Cisneros transports us to a bygone era where the wild frontier was tamed by the fearless and skilled riders of the West. Through his intricate artwork, you can almost hear the thundering hooves, feel the dust of the trail, and sense the untamed spirit of the land.

The Pearl’s third annual Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration will take place on Saturday, October 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the museum. This family-friendly event is free of charge and will be filled with activities for all ages.
Performances throughout the day will include Ballet Folklorico, Aztec Dance, and mariachi music. Art stations will allow guests to create traditional Latin American art such as sugar skull masks, Marigold paper sculptures, and monarch butterfly crafts.
Guests are encouraged to dress in traditional costumes and bring photos of loved ones to contribute to an Ofrenda on-site.
As part of the event, an outdoor Art Market is also planned with items for sale by local artists. Artists who would like to exhibit and sell their work are welcome to apply by contacting Grace Mussell at gracepfmfa@gmail.com or 281-376-6322.

The Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts will host their 2023 Fall Luncheon, Expressions of Gratitude, on Thursday, October 12. The event is chaired by Sue Ann Lurcott and will take place at Shirley Acres.
This year’s luncheon will honor two groups who have contributed significantly to the Pearl: American Association of University Women - North Harris County Branch, and the Volunteer Guild of the Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts.
Dr. Bennie Lambert, Acting President of Lone Star College – North Harris, will speak about the significance of volunteering. The event also includes a silent auction, raffle, and entertainment by the Grateful Geezers.

Preschool Programs
Little ones love the Pearl’s preschool programs!
Little Art Historians will take place on Wednesday mornings in October for ages 3 to 5. Children learn about a new artist each week and create fun projects inspired by that artist. Registration is required for this program.
Art Start is offered every Tuesday morning for children ages 5 and under. The program is free and includes story time with a related art activity. Space is limited, so please register online.

Volunteers Needed!
The Pearl has a busy fall ahead, with school field trips, gallery tours, Family Days and much more.
Volunteer docents are needed to provide guided tours for guests of all ages. Docents should have an interest in art and be available during the day. Training is provided for each new exhibition, and docents enjoy camaraderie and fun as they share their love of art with others.
