Ensuring Child Safety on the Road: Katy Fire Department Offers Car Seat Checks
As parents, caregivers, and guardians, ensuring the safety of our children while on the road is a top priority. Yet, startling statistics reveal that a significant number of children in America ride in incorrectly installed car seats each year, leading to tragic consequences. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), an estimated 46% of car seats are installed incorrectly. Even more alarming, the NHTSA reports that car crashes are a leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 13, with a significant number of these fatalities attributed to improper car seat installation.
In light of these concerning statistics, the Katy Fire Department has taken proactive steps to address child passenger safety within the community. With four certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians (CPS Techs) on staff, the department offers car seat and booster seat installation and checks to ensure that young passengers are properly secured on every journey.
These CPS Techs undergo rigorous training and certification to stay abreast of the latest safety guidelines and best practices for car seat installation. Their expertise allows them to assist parents and caregivers in properly installing car seats, ensuring a secure fit and optimal protection for children of all ages.
