Embracing Lifelong Learning: How Lone Star College-CyFair is Cultivating Community for Cypress Area Seniors
Lone Star College-CyFair is inviting residents aged 50 and better to discover a world of learning and personal growth at its upcoming open house on January 9, 2025. The event will showcase the Academy for Lifelong Learning (ALL) program, offering an exciting opportunity for attendees to explore a wide range of educational courses and activities designed specifically for seniors.
The open house will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Conference Center (CENT) on the LSC-CyFair campus, located at 9191 Barker Cypress Road in Cypress. The event provides an opportunity to meet instructors, learn about the courses offered, and register for upcoming classes. It is open to both current members of the ALL program and newcomers interested in starting their learning journey.
"The Academy for Lifelong Learning offers something for everyone," said LSC-CyFair Continuing Education Director, Andrea Milburn. "Whether you're interested in fitness, arts and crafts, genealogy, or even technology, the program provides a wealth of opportunities to stay mentally, physically, and socially engaged."
Among the new courses for the spring semester are “Lose Weight-Feel Great!”, “Retire Smart 101”, and “Introduction to Watercolor”, along with other favorites from previous sessions. With a $25 membership fee, seniors can access a variety of educational classes, skill-building workshops, and fun social activities. In addition, ALL members can participate in free or low-cost seminars and enjoy discounts on performing arts events and access to college libraries.

The benefits of lifelong learning extend far beyond just acquiring new skills. According to the National Institute on Aging, engaging in mentally stimulating activities like those offered by the ALL program has been shown to help seniors maintain cognitive function, reduce the risk of mental health issues like depression, and improve overall emotional well-being. Additionally, regular participation in social and physical activities, such as those provided in the program, can enhance physical health, boost mood, and increase life satisfaction.
"This program is truly about more than just learning. It's about creating a community where seniors can connect, grow, and thrive," said Milburn.
In addition to the variety of courses, the ALL program also offers opportunities for members to share their own expertise by volunteering as instructors or committee members. The program is designed to empower seniors to stay active, healthy, and engaged while continuing to enrich their lives through education and social interaction.
