Elgin’s Legacy on Display: Distinguished Alumni Celebration to Honor Community Leaders, Lifelong Service and Local Pride
For many communities, a school district’s legacy is measured not only by what happens inside classrooms but by the lives its graduates lead long after they leave campus. In Elgin, that legacy will once again take center stage as residents gather to celebrate alumni whose professional accomplishments, community service and dedication to others have left a lasting impact on the city and beyond.
On Saturday, June 27, Elgin Independent School District will continue a tradition that began in 2010 with the annual Purple and White Jubilee, an event designed to honor distinguished graduates while reconnecting generations of Elgin residents. The celebration combines recognition, reflection and community fellowship, bringing together former classmates, families, educators and neighbors.
The event begins with an awards ceremony at 2 p.m. in the Elgin High School auditorium on County Line Road, where recipients of the 2026 Distinguished Alumni Awards and the EISD Distinguished Service Award will be recognized. Festivities will continue from 3 to 5 p.m. with an all-class reunion at the SPJST Hall on Highway 95.
Honoring Alumni Who Continue to Make a Difference
The Distinguished Alumni Awards recognize graduates whose achievements reflect positively on Elgin ISD while demonstrating excellence in their respective fields and service to their communities.
This year’s honorees represent a wide range of accomplishments:
- Adam Muery, Elgin High School Class of 1994, will be recognized for business and professional achievement.
- George Wesley Smith Jr., Washington High School Class of 1963, will be honored for community service.
- Ashton Howell, Elgin High School Class of 2007, will receive recognition for contributions to education.
- Malford Milligan, Elgin High School Class of 1978, will be honored for his work in social services and the arts.
In addition, Cheryl Thomas will receive the EISD Distinguished Service Award, recognizing her contributions and commitment to the district and community.
The awards highlight the many paths Elgin graduates have taken while reinforcing a common theme: investing time, talent and leadership back into the communities they serve.
A New Legacy Award Honors Ricky Rodriguez
One of the most meaningful moments of this year’s ceremony will be the presentation of a special posthumous recognition honoring the late Ricky Rodriguez, a member of the Elgin High School Class of 1974.
The newly established Ricky Rodriguez Legacy of Excellence Award was created to recognize graduates who embody leadership, service and a deep commitment to helping others.
Rodriguez became known throughout Elgin for mentoring young people through his business and for his involvement with organizations and causes that strengthened the community. His work included support for the Boy Scouts of America, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, programs serving senior citizens and assistance for residents facing difficult circumstances.
The award ensures that Rodriguez’s example of service and generosity will continue inspiring future generations.
Celebrating Elgin’s History and Those Who Helped Preserve It
The Purple and White Jubilee is also an opportunity to honor Elgin’s rich educational history.
During the ceremony, members of the graduating classes from the 1940s will receive special recognition. Attendees will also remember the late Homer Johnson, an Elgin High School graduate from the Class of 1950 whose work helped preserve decades of school history.
Johnson created the composite class photographs displayed in the Elgin ISD administration building, providing a visual record of generations of students who have called Elgin home.
More Than a Reunion
While the awards ceremony recognizes individual accomplishments, the Purple and White Jubilee serves a broader purpose for the community.
Events like this offer residents a chance to reconnect with former classmates, celebrate shared history and recognize the people whose leadership and service continue to strengthen Elgin. They also provide younger generations with examples of how education, civic engagement and community involvement can create lasting impact.
Whether attendees are longtime graduates, current students, educators or residents with no direct connection to Elgin ISD, organizers encourage everyone in the community to participate.
Following the ceremony, the reunion at SPJST Hall will feature music, entertainment and opportunities for neighbors and friends to reconnect, continuing a tradition that has become an important part of Elgin’s community identity.
What Residents Should Know
The 2026 Purple and White Jubilee and Distinguished Alumni Awards Ceremony will take place Saturday, June 27, beginning at 2 p.m. at the Elgin High School auditorium. The all-class reunion will follow from 3 to 5 p.m. at SPJST Hall.
For Elgin residents, the event offers more than a celebration of past accomplishments. It serves as a reminder that the community’s future is shaped by people who choose to lead, serve and invest in the place they call home.
As Elgin continues to grow, honoring those who have helped build its foundation remains an important tradition—one that connects generations while inspiring the next chapter of the community’s story.
