Who Is Cypress Winds Community Band?
Founded in 2024, Cypress Winds Community Band is a semi-professional ensemble made up of more than 70 music educators representing more than 35 elementary, middle and high school programs. The group gives teachers a place to remain musically active, grow professionally and collaborate through high-level performance.
That mission matters in a community like Cypress, where school music programs are often a major part of student life. Cypress Winds helps keep educators connected to the art they teach while also giving students and families access to high-quality performances close to home.
The ensemble presents three free concerts annually at Lone Star College–CyFair and other local venues, helping make live wind band music accessible to the public. Its broader goal is to become a leading community band in Texas, recognized for musical excellence, educational impact and strong partnerships.
Cypress Winds Community Band is also a registered 501(c)(3) Texas nonprofit organization. The designation allows the organization to accept tax-deductible donations that directly support its mission. Funding comes from member dues, sponsorships and contributions from individuals and community partners, helping the band keep performances free and open to the public.
Built by Volunteers, Rooted in Community
Cypress Winds is entirely volunteer-based. Its musicians, conductors and board members give their time and talent without compensation, reflecting a shared commitment to music, professional growth and service to the Cypress community.
That volunteer spirit is part of what makes the ensemble’s upcoming appearance at the Texas Bandmasters Association Convention meaningful. The group is not only representing itself; it is representing local schools, music classrooms, families, sponsors and the broader Northwest Houston arts community.
Cypress Winds also maintains a partnership with Lone Star College–CyFair, where the ensemble rehearses and performs at the Center for the Arts. The partnership provides access to a premier performance venue in the heart of Cypress and supports the shared goal of advancing the arts locally.
Through that collaboration, Cypress Winds is able to present free public concerts in a professional setting while building connections with students, educators and community members.
What Is the Texas Bandmasters Association Convention?
The Texas Bandmasters Association, established in 1948, supports Texas band directors and music educators by promoting high standards in instrumental music education. The organization also advocates for the value of music in students’ cultural, intellectual and social development.
Its annual Convention/Clinic is one of the major gathering places for Texas band educators. The event includes clinics, concerts, exhibits, student programs, family activities and booster-related programming. The association also provides year-round support through its quarterly magazine, Bandmasters Review, online teaching resources, archived materials and the TBA Outreach Program.
TBA is led by a Board of Directors made up of professional band directors and fine arts administrators from across Texas. Board members serve seven-year volunteer terms, beginning as Sergeant-at-Arms and advancing through leadership roles each year. The organization also emphasizes geographic and teaching-level balance, including representation from middle school, high school, college and administrative perspectives.
For Cypress Winds to perform as a featured ensemble at the 2026 convention places the young community band in front of a statewide audience of music educators and arts leaders.
Why This Matters for Cypress and Northwest Houston
In a fast-growing region, community arts groups help give neighborhoods a sense of identity. Cypress Winds brings together educators from across Northwest Houston, many of whom spend their school days teaching the next generation of musicians. On stage, they model the same discipline, teamwork and love of music they encourage in their students.
The July 14 free concert in Cypress gives residents a chance to support that work before the ensemble travels to San Antonio. It also highlights the role local schools, colleges, nonprofits and sponsors play in building a stronger arts culture close to home.
For parents, it is a family-friendly night out. For students, it is a chance to hear polished wind band music performed by educators and mentors. For local residents, it is a reminder that Cypress has a growing arts community worth showing up for.
