Cy-Fair ISD HORIZONS Gifted and Talented Referrals Now Open: What Copperbrook Families Need to Know
For parents who have wondered whether their child may need a greater academic challenge, Cypress-Fairbanks ISD has opened its annual referral window for the district’s HORIZONS Gifted & Talented Program.
Beginning Aug. 12, new and currently enrolled CFISD students in grades 1 through 11 may be referred for HORIZONS screening, giving families in Copperbrook an opportunity to request evaluation for a program designed around the academic, social and emotional needs of gifted students.
The deadline to submit a referral and parent permission for mid-year 2026 screening is Nov. 30, 2026. Students whose referrals are received by the final school day in November are expected to be assessed in early spring.
For families unfamiliar with the process, the referral does not mean a student is automatically placed in HORIZONS. It begins the district’s screening process to determine whether a student qualifies for gifted and talented services.
How CFISD Parents Can Request HORIZONS Screening
Parents and guardians may request screening through the “Gifted and Talented” link in the CFISD Parent Portal. The online acknowledgement opens for submissions Aug. 12 and must be completed by Nov. 30 for consideration during the mid-year screening cycle.
Families may also contact their child’s elementary school counselor or, at the secondary level, the campus director of instruction for additional information about referrals, screening and HORIZONS services.
While new and currently enrolled students in grades 1 through 11 may technically be referred throughout the year, CFISD advises that referrals must be received by the last school day in November for students to participate in early spring assessment.
That distinction can be important for Copperbrook parents who may be weighing whether their child’s classroom experience is providing enough depth, complexity or academic pace.
What Is the CFISD HORIZONS Gifted and Talented Program?
HORIZONS is Cypress-Fairbanks ISD’s instructional program for students identified as gifted and talented.
Its curriculum is based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, or TEKS, required by the Texas Education Agency, but instruction is differentiated in pace, depth and complexity to provide an appropriate level of challenge for students who may be ready to work beyond traditional grade-level expectations.
The program is designed around the idea that gifted students may need more than simply additional assignments. CFISD’s philosophy calls for opportunities to develop advanced problem-solving and processing skills, self-directed learning, independent study and original work of greater complexity.
The district also places emphasis on the social and emotional needs that can accompany giftedness, including opportunities for students to work with classmates their own age, with intellectual peers and independently.
CFISD describes the broader mission of HORIZONS as a partnership among students, parents, teachers and administrators that helps gifted learners develop their abilities to their fullest potential both in the classroom and in the community.
What HORIZONS Looks Like From Kindergarten Through High School
Services vary by grade level.
For kindergarten students, gifted services begin in March each year, as required by the Texas Education Agency. Identified kindergarten students participate in weekly pull-out instruction using interdisciplinary units focused on higher-level thinking and creativity in reading and math.
Beginning in first grade, identified HORIZONS students receive gifted services in language arts, mathematics, social studies and science. Students are grouped in ways that allow them to spend time learning alongside intellectual peers while participating in independent study, research and other advanced learning experiences.
At the secondary level, CFISD also offers courses designated specifically for HORIZONS students in grades 6 through 12.
Those courses include:
- Grade 6: World Cultures H
- Grade 7: Texas History H
- Grade 8: U.S. History H
- Grade 9: English I H and World Geography H
- Grade 10: English II H, World History H and World Geography H
- Grade 11: World Geography H
- Grade 12: World Geography H
Students may also receive gifted services through Level 1/HORIZONS middle school courses or K-level/HORIZONS high school cluster classes, which provide additional opportunities to learn with other identified gifted students.
Teachers providing HORIZONS-designated instruction are required to complete at least 30 hours of training in gifted education.
HORIZONS Goes Beyond Faster Coursework
One of the goals of gifted education is not simply to move students through material more quickly, but to give them opportunities to think more deeply and create work that reflects their individual strengths.
The Texas Education Agency requires students identified as gifted to have opportunities to develop advanced-level products and performances and to accelerate in their areas of strength.
CFISD supports that goal through its annual HORIZONS Showcase, which gives students an opportunity to present advanced projects and original work.
The program’s stated goals also include expanding students’ intellectual curiosity, strengthening creative and problem-solving skills, keeping teachers current on gifted education practices and building partnerships with parents that support students’ social and emotional well-being.
For families in Copperbrook, that means the referral period can be the first step toward determining whether a child could benefit from a learning environment built specifically for students who need greater academic depth or complexity.
Parents Also Have a Voice in the Program
CFISD’s HORIZONS Parent Advisory Committee serves as a resource for parents and guardians of gifted students, providing a forum for discussion and sharing information on issues related to gifted education.
The committee is another way families can better understand the academic and emotional experiences of gifted learners while staying connected with other parents navigating similar questions.
