Cy-Fair HS Quarterback Named Top Offensive Player by Touchdown Club of Houston
Cy-Fair High School senior quarterback Trey Owens was named the Touchdown Club of Houston’s 2023 Offensive Player of the Year, winning the honor Dec. 13 among 10 finalists in Greater Houston at a ceremony at the Bayou City Event Center.
The Touchdown Club’s 44th annual UIL High School Awards Dinner, presented by Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine and Texan Live, showcased the finalists for the organization’s awards. Owens and two CFISD head coaches were recognized as finalists.
Owens, a three-year starter for Cy-Fair, helped lead the Bobcats to an 11-2 record and appearance in the Division I-6A Region III semifinals this season. He threw for 3,093 yards and 42 touchdowns this year, adding another three scores on the ground.
A multi-sport athlete during his time at Cy-Fair, Owens is verbally committed to the University of Texas to play football.
“This was one of my bucket list things coming into high school,” Owens said. “To see all those guys with big names winning when I was younger and even as a freshman, I thought it would be pretty cool if I won it. To my family, coaches, teammates and friends who have been with me through this whole process, it’s awesome to see it wrap up this way.”
Bridgeland High School Head Coach Lonnie Madison and Cy-Fair Head coach Jeff Miller were honored among 10 finalists for the Coach of the Year award.
Owens is the fourth CFISD standout over the past five seasons to win a UIL high school award from the Touchdown Club, which began honoring Houston’s top student-athletes in 1980, and the first-ever winner from Cy-Fair High School.
He follows former Bridgeland quarterback Conner Weigman, who was named Offensive Player of the Year in 2021, and a pair of consecutive Defensive Player of the Year honorees. Former Bridgeland defensive back Bryce McMorris earned the award for the 2020 season, while former Cypress Creek High School linebacker Josh White won in 2019.
