Cy-Fair Fire Department Shares Chimney Safety Tips for Homeowners
October 19 2023
With the beginning of the Fall season and cooler temperatures starting to set in, many Cy-Fair area residents are looking forward to sitting around the fireplace.
Did you know that over time, fireplaces build up soot that can ignite, especially if you use artificial logs or pinewood? When you are done enjoying your fireplace, make sure all flames are extinguished and wood is not smoldering, which means that the wood is burning slowly with smoke but no flame. Also, make sure you have the proper fireplace coverings in place to prevent embers from coming out and have a fire extinguisher close by when in use.
Make sure you do a yearly maintenance to check for buildup and cracks in your fireplace and do not forget to check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure they are working properly.

Your dedicated Cy-Fair Fire Department recommends that residents check their smoke alarms monthly, change the batteries every six months, and remember that smoke detectors do have a life span, which is usually 10 years.
