Cy-Fair CERT Graduates 42nd Class of Emergency Responders
Cy-Fair Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) has just celebrated the graduation of their 42nd class of trained citizens. These graduates spent eight weeks honing their skills on how to assist their community and loved ones in the event of a disaster, embodying the mission of doing "the greatest good for the greatest number of people".
Cy-Fair CERT was established in 2007 as a 501(c)(3) organization. Its mission is to foster a strong commitment to emergency preparedness within Harris County and its surroundings. Funded by grants, donations, and fundraising events, Cy-Fair CERT conducts several free, 8-week CERT training classes throughout the year.
But their contribution goes beyond offering training sessions. In their bid to promote a safer and robust community, the organization maintains essential disaster relief supplies in a cargo container located in the Copperfield area, and manages several Neighborhood S.A.F.E. storage units. Cy-Fair CERT also assembles an active team of HAM radio operators who participate in monthly meetings and emergency practice drills, providing an additional layer of community resilience.
Class 42 participated in a range of activities, from practicing different methods of patient transport to undergoing medical operations and triage training. Students learned the basics of disaster preparedness, fire safety, search and rescue, and even terrorism hazard planning. They tackled hands-on exercises such as extinguishing a small-controlled fire, under the expert guidance of instructors from the Cy-Fair Fire Department. The final exercise, with volunteers playing victims, provided invaluable practical experience for the participants.
As Cy-Fair CERT prepares to usher in their next class of community changemakers in the spring of 2025, interested members of the community are invited to follow Cy-Fair CERT on Facebook for all the latest updates and registration information.
