Cross Creek Ranch Families in Katy ISD and Lamar CISD Get October Fall Break Beginning Oct. 9
For families in Cross Creek Ranch, the upcoming October fall break will bring a few days away from the usual school routine, although exactly when students return to class depends on which district they attend.
Both Katy ISD and Lamar Consolidated ISD students begin their fall break Friday, Oct. 9. Lamar CISD students will remain out through Monday, Oct. 12, returning to school Tuesday, Oct. 13. Katy ISD students will have one additional day off, with fall break continuing through Tuesday, Oct. 13, before classes resume Wednesday, Oct. 14.
For families with children attending schools in different districts, or for neighbors living in communities served by both Katy ISD and Lamar CISD, that one-day difference is worth keeping in mind when making plans.
Two School Districts, Two Return Dates
The shared Oct. 9 start means much of the neighborhood may settle into fall break at the same time, but normal school-day routines will return in stages.
Lamar CISD students will have four consecutive days away from school when the weekend is included, from Friday, Oct. 9, through Monday, Oct. 12. Students are scheduled to return Tuesday, Oct. 13.
Katy ISD students will have five consecutive days away from class, from Friday, Oct. 9, through Tuesday, Oct. 13, with school resuming Wednesday, Oct. 14. Katy ISD’s current calendar lists Oct. 9, Oct. 12 and Oct. 13 as Fall Break for students and staff.
That staggered return may mean neighborhood activity looks a little different Tuesday, when Lamar CISD students are back in class but Katy ISD students are still home.
More Kids at Home Means a Busier Neighborhood
Residents who do not have school-age children may still notice a change in the pace of the community during fall break.
With students away from school, neighbors may see more children riding bikes, playing outside, visiting parks or walking around the neighborhood during hours when they would normally be in class. Drivers traveling through Cross Creek Ranch can help by slowing down on residential streets and staying especially alert near parks, trails, crosswalks and intersections.
Families can also use the break to remind children about basic neighborhood safety, including looking both ways before crossing streets, watching for vehicles backing out of driveways and staying aware of their surroundings while outside.
Residents who remain home during the break can help by paying attention to what is happening nearby. If a neighbor has mentioned plans to travel, simply being aware of the property and reporting suspicious activity can add another layer of neighborhood awareness.
Traveling for Fall Break? Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office Offers House Watch
For Fort Bend County families planning to leave town, the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office offers a House Watch program for eligible homeowners whose residences will be unoccupied.
Residents can submit a request through the Sheriff’s Office online House Watch portal. The program is available to homeowners living in Fort Bend County, and requests may cover no more than 14 days during a three-month quarter.
The Sheriff’s Office notes that House Watch requests cannot be submitted for properties that are actively for sale, rent or lease. They also cannot be used when anyone will be occupying or entering the residence during the requested period. Once submitted, a request cannot be changed, although it may be canceled.
Deputies make an effort to check participating residences as time and workload allow, although the Sheriff’s Office does not guarantee that a home will be checked at a particular time or on a particular date. House Watch services are also suspended during natural disasters such as hurricanes or floods.
New users can select “Request My First House Watch” through the online portal, while returning users can enter the email address already on file and generate a PIN. Residents who have questions or encounter problems with the service can call the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office at 281-341-4665 and select option 1.
Families preparing to travel may also want to take a few additional precautions before leaving, including securing doors, windows and gates, removing valuables from vehicles, placing interior lights on timers and arranging to have mail and packages held.
Because the Fort Bend County House Watch program does not allow anyone to enter or occupy the residence during the requested period, families planning to have a friend, relative, pet sitter or other person visit the home should keep that restriction in mind before submitting a request.
A Little Awareness Goes a Long Way During Fall Break
Whether the break means a short trip, extra family time, afternoons at the neighborhood park or simply a few mornings without the usual school-day rush, the Oct. 9 start of fall break will temporarily change the rhythm around communities served by both Katy ISD and Lamar CISD.
More children may be outside during the day, some homes may be empty while families travel and normal weekday routines will resume at slightly different times as Lamar CISD students return Oct. 13 and Katy ISD students return Oct. 14.
For Cross Creek Ranch families, keeping those dates in mind and taking a few simple precautions can help make the extended weekend safer and easier, whether it is spent close to home or somewhere farther away.
