Copeland and Woodard Elementary Students Shine in CFISD Spelling Bee, Advance to Regional Competition
The annual Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District (CFISD) Elementary Spelling Bee showcased the impressive spelling abilities of young students, with Wilson Nguyen, a fifth grader from Copeland Elementary, taking first place after an intense 23-round competition. Woodard Elementary third grader Rika Arun followed closely behind, earning the runner-up position after battling through 22 rounds at the event, held Jan. 29 at the Berry Center.
Nguyen and Arun will now advance to the Houston Community College Regional Spelling Bee on March 22, where they will compete against top spellers from the region. The top two winners from the regional bee will earn the opportunity to participate in the prestigious Scripps National Spelling Bee, set to take place in Washington, D.C., from May 27-29.
“Our 58 spellers did an outstanding job representing their campuses at the district-level spelling bee,” said Stephanie Fields, CFISD Elementary Spelling Bee coordinator. “Their impressive spelling skills, sportsmanship, and positive attitudes created a welcoming yet competitive atmosphere. We are incredibly proud of all the hard work they put in to reach this level of the competition. Best of luck to our winners as they move on to the Houston Community College Regional Bee!”

A Display of Academic Excellence in CFISD
The CFISD Elementary Spelling Bee featured representatives from elementary schools across the district, each of whom had already won their respective campus spelling bee. These students demonstrated their dedication and preparation as they competed for the top spots in a contest that required not only a strong vocabulary but also the composure to spell under pressure.
The annual event is a stepping stone toward the Scripps National Spelling Bee, one of the most recognized academic competitions in the country. Founded in 1925, the Scripps National Spelling Bee brings together the best young spellers from across the United States and beyond, providing them with a platform to showcase their linguistic skills and hard work.
A Bright Future for Young Spellers
For Nguyen and Arun, advancing to the next level represents a significant achievement, as they now prepare to compete against some of the most talented young spellers in the greater Houston area. As they set their sights on the Houston Community College Regional Spelling Bee, both students will continue to refine their skills in hopes of securing a spot on the national stage in Washington, D.C.
