Comal ISD Breaks Ground on Elementary School #22 in New Braunfels, Expanding Capacity Along Growing 281 Corridor

March 19 2026

For families across New Braunfels and the rapidly expanding Highway 281 corridor, the future of local schools just became a little clearer—and a little less crowded.

Comal Independent School District (Comal ISD) officially broke ground on Elementary School #22 on March 17, 2026, marking a significant step forward in addressing enrollment growth and classroom capacity in one of the fastest-growing regions in Texas. Located at 1664 Walker Run in New Braunfels, the new campus represents both immediate relief for existing schools and long-term planning for a community that continues to expand.

When doors open in August 2027, the campus is expected to ease enrollment pressure at Bill Brown Elementary School and surrounding schools, giving families more space, resources, and opportunities closer to home.

A New School Designed for a Growing Community

Elementary School #22 is more than just a new building—it’s part of a broader effort to ensure that Comal ISD students can learn in environments designed for today’s needs and tomorrow’s growth.

The new campus will serve Pre-K through 5th grade students and include:

  • Modern classrooms and collaborative learning spaces
  • A full gymnasium and cafeteria
  • Library and fine arts areas
  • Special education facilities
  • Administrative offices and student support services
  • Updated mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and technology systems

The project is being constructed on public land using public funds, with an estimated cost of $65 million. Designed by LPA Inc., the facility will span approximately 107,000 square feet, with construction already underway following a January 2026 start date and a targeted completion in mid-2027.

For families moving into the area or already feeling the strain of growing class sizes, the investment signals a proactive approach to maintaining quality education as enrollment climbs.

Why This Matters for New Braunfels Families

The 281 corridor and surrounding neighborhoods in Comal County have seen consistent population growth, bringing new housing developments and an influx of families into the district.

As a result, campuses like Bill Brown Elementary have experienced increasing enrollment pressure. The addition of Elementary School #22 is expected to redistribute student populations more evenly, helping:

  • Reduce overcrowded classrooms
  • Improve student-to-teacher ratios
  • Enhance access to programs and campus resources
  • Shorten commute times for some families

For homeowners and prospective buyers, new school construction often reflects strong community investment—something that can influence property values, neighborhood desirability, and long-term stability.

Part of a Larger Vision Funded by Voters

The groundbreaking of Elementary School #22 is directly tied to the voter-approved Comal ISD Bond 2023, which allocated $560.6 million toward new campuses, infrastructure, transportation, and safety improvements across the district.

That bond package includes:

  • Three new elementary schools
  • A new middle school
  • A replacement campus for Life Bridges
  • New buses, land acquisition, and districtwide safety upgrades
  • An additional $28 million for student technology and infrastructure

The project also reflects a longer pattern of community-backed investment. Since 2015, Comal ISD voters have approved four major bond packages aimed at keeping pace with rapid growth.

Previous bonds funded:

  • New high schools, including Davenport High School and Pieper High School
  • New middle schools such as Danville Middle School and Pieper Ranch Middle School
  • Technology upgrades for students and teachers
  • Maintenance, transportation, and safety improvements

Notably, while some propositions related to stadium expansions and athletic facilities were proposed in past bonds, voters chose not to approve those measures—highlighting a consistent focus on academic and infrastructure priorities.

What Happens Next

Construction on Elementary School #22 is expected to continue through 2026 and into 2027, with an anticipated opening aligned with the start of the 2027–2028 school year.

As development progresses, families in the area can expect future updates on:

  • Attendance zoning and boundary adjustments
  • Staffing and principal selection
  • Enrollment timelines and registration details

For many residents, the groundbreaking is more than ceremonial—it represents a tangible response to growth and a commitment to maintaining the quality of education that has drawn families to Comal ISD in the first place.

A Community Milestone in Motion

Moments like this often reflect more than construction timelines—they reflect shared priorities.

With continued voter support and long-range planning, Comal ISD’s expansion efforts aim to ensure that as New Braunfels grows, its schools grow with it—thoughtfully, sustainably, and with students at the center.
