Houston-area families, gamers, anime fans and racing enthusiasts will have a chance to experience Sam Houston Race Park in a completely different way this Memorial Day weekend as the venue hosts its first-ever “Character Derby at the Races” on Saturday, May 23, 2026.

The themed event combines live horse racing, cosplay competitions, food trucks, vendors and interactive entertainment into what organizers are calling one of the most unique nights of the spring racing season. Gates open at 3 p.m., with live racing beginning under the lights at 6:30 p.m.

Located along Beltway 8 in northwest Houston, Sam Houston Race Park has been a longtime entertainment destination in the region since opening in 1994. The venue is known for its live thoroughbred and quarter horse racing seasons, concert events and community gatherings, drawing visitors from across Greater Houston throughout the year. For many local families, the track has become a tradition — especially during spring and summer racing events.

Now, the race park is leaning into a growing crossover between entertainment culture and live event experiences by creating a night designed to appeal to both racing fans and cosplay communities.

“This is the kind of event where different interests all come together in one place,” organizers shared. “Whether you're a racing fan, anime fan, cosplay creator, gamer, or just looking for a fun Saturday night, this is an event you do not want to miss.”

Cosplay, Character Costumes and Live Racing Come Together

One of the biggest draws of the evening is the cosplay element woven throughout the event. Guests who arrive dressed in cosplay or character-themed attire will receive free admission, while general admission is priced at $5.

The event is designed to remain family-friendly and safe-for-work, making it approachable for both longtime cosplay enthusiasts and families simply looking for a different kind of night out in Houston.

Throughout the evening, attendees can participate in themed activities including:

  • A cosplay talent showcase featuring skits, singing, dancing and character performances
  • Cosplay foot races for kids and adults
  • A themed vendor market featuring fan art, figurines, stickers, collectibles and gaming-inspired merchandise
  • Specialty food trucks and desserts
  • Live horse racing throughout the night

The cosplay marketplace opens at 3 p.m. and will feature vendors offering anime-inspired merchandise, collectibles and handcrafted items. Organizers noted that all costumes and vendor items must remain family-friendly, with no weapons or adult-themed content permitted.

Prize packages include:

  • First Place: $250 cash voucher and suite party
  • Second Place: $100 cash voucher and dinner for four
  • Third Place: $50 cash voucher

Additional foot races throughout the night will give both children and adults an opportunity to participate, with winners receiving trophies and commemorative framed photos.

Sam Houston Race Park Continues Expanding Community Entertainment Events

While Sam Houston Race Park has traditionally centered around horse racing, the venue has increasingly expanded its event lineup in recent years to attract broader audiences across the Houston area.

Special themed nights, festivals and entertainment-driven experiences have become an important part of the venue’s identity as families continue searching for local weekend events that offer more than a standard night out.

For Houston-area residents, events like Character Derby at the Races also highlight how entertainment venues are evolving to create more interactive and community-centered experiences — particularly for younger audiences and fandom communities that continue growing across Texas.
