CenterPoint Energy Restores Power to Over 640,000 Customers Following Hurricane Beryl's Devastation
As of this afternoon, CenterPoint Energy has restored power to more than 640,000 affected customers as part of their efforts to combat the impact of Hurricane Beryl.
In a news release, the utility company, headquartered in Houston, detailed how 2.26 million customers lost power following the devastation caused by the storm. Hurricane Beryl brought with it damaging winds that reached speeds of up to 97-miles-per-hour in Brazoria County, 89-miles-per-hour in Harris County, and 78-miles-per-hour in Galveston County. These wind speeds caused significant destruction to parts of the electric grid, with Galveston and Brazoria County hit particularly hard.
With a robust response strategy that includes working around the clock, CenterPoint Energy has restored power to over a quarter of those affected within 24 hours of deeming it safe for its crews to take to the field. They hope to have power restored to 1 million of the 2.26 million impacted customers by the end of tomorrow, with the overall timeline dependent on ongoing damage assessment and restoration efforts.
Turnaround efforts by CenterPoint Energy include proactive measures taken even before the storm made landfall. Crews were strategically positioned in locations predicted to be safe during the storm and were subsequently deployed into the field for damage assessment and restoration as soon as conditions allowed. To support these efforts, the company has secured nearly 12,000 frontline workers.
Despite the challenging conditions, CenterPoint Energy remains committed to its customers. Lynnae Wilson, Senior Vice President of Electric Business stated, "We understand how difficult it is to be without electricity in July and we are committed to working around-the-clock until every last customer is restored."
The company is also focusing its restoration efforts on essential facilities vital for health and public safety and has deployed mobile generation units for emergency facilities, cooling centers, and non-profit organizations assisting families with critically ill children.
In order to keep customers informed, CenterPoint Energy is regularly updating outage information on their website and encourages customers to enroll in the Power Alert Service® for specific restoration updates in their community.
