The Fort Bend County Master Gardeners transformed their Demonstration Gardens in Rosenberg into a lively hub of learning, conservation, and family fun on May 2 as hundreds of residents attended the 2026 Butterfly Celebration.

Held on four acres adjacent to the Fort Bend County Fairgrounds, the annual event drew more than 400 visitors despite heavy rain the day before. By Saturday morning, cool temperatures and clear skies created ideal conditions for residents to explore gardens, meet local gardening experts, and learn how pollinators impact everyday life in Fort Bend County neighborhoods.

For many families, the event offered more than a weekend outing. It became a hands-on reminder of how native plants, butterflies, bees, and sustainable gardening practices are increasingly shaping local landscapes across Rosenberg, Sugar Land, Richmond, Katy, Missouri City, and surrounding Fort Bend County communities.

“It was a perfect day for the Master Gardeners to show the community many forms of gardening,” said Shelly Beck, Butterfly Celebration co-chair. “Master Gardeners answered questions and offered suggestions for their visitors.”

Fort Bend County Master Gardeners Continue Expanding Community Education

The Fort Bend County Master Gardeners organization serves as a volunteer education arm of Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service. The group is widely known throughout the region for helping residents learn research-based gardening practices suited specifically for Fort Bend County’s climate, soil conditions, and environmental needs.

Throughout the year, Master Gardeners maintain the Demonstration Gardens at 1402 Band Road in Rosenberg, where visitors can explore pollinator gardens, vegetable gardens, EarthKind Landscaping practices, fruit trees, native plants, and water conservation techniques. The gardens are open to the public daily during daylight hours and often serve as an educational resource for homeowners looking to improve landscaping while supporting local ecosystems.

This year’s Butterfly Celebration highlighted many of those efforts in a highly interactive way.

Pollinator Education Takes Center Stage

Butterflies, bees, caterpillars, and native plants remained the focus throughout the event, with residents learning why pollinator-friendly gardening has become increasingly important across Texas.

Inside the education area, visitors observed live caterpillars, chrysalises, and newly emerging butterflies. Other exhibits showcased preserved butterflies and insects while Master Gardeners discussed pollinator habitats and EarthKind Landscaping principles designed to reduce water use and chemical dependency.

Children especially gravitated toward the interactive learning stations.

“Children loved learning about pollinators, chasing giant bubbles, and having their faces painted,” Beck said. “The Master Gardener Youth Activities team helped children make coffee filter flowers and butterfly rings – all while teaching about butterflies and bees and their importance in our world.”

The scavenger hunt proved particularly popular with younger visitors, featuring separate versions for readers and non-readers to ensure accessibility for all age groups.

A newly introduced sidewalk chalk butterfly art activity also became an instant favorite.

“We had some great little artists!” Beck added.

Native Milkweed Distribution Draws Strong Public Interest

One of the largest attractions during the Butterfly Celebration centered around native milkweed plants, which play a critical role in supporting Monarch butterfly populations.

Master Gardeners distributed and sold approximately 450 native milkweed plants during the event, underscoring growing community interest in butterfly conservation and native gardening practices throughout Fort Bend County.

“Master Gardeners shared information on why we should grow native milkweed and gave each family a native milkweed to take home,” Beck said.

Master Gardener Nancy Schoepf, who co-chaired the milkweed initiative alongside Master Gardener Mary Parkhouse, said residents were eager to participate.

“The public was truly excited to go home with both purchased and free milkweed,” Schoepf said. “I even sent two milkweed caterpillars home with the plants.”

The educational focus comes as Monarch butterfly populations continue facing habitat pressures across North America, making native plant education increasingly important for local communities.

Tree Trail and Gardening Demonstrations Offer Practical Backyard Advice

The Butterfly Celebration also highlighted several practical gardening demonstrations aimed at helping homeowners improve their own outdoor spaces.

Master Gardeners demonstrated lily division techniques while explaining the difference between true lilies and commonly mislabeled varieties. Visitors also learned about DIY drip irrigation systems and rainwater harvesting methods increasingly used to conserve water during Texas heat and drought conditions.

The event concluded one presentation with a drawing for a rain barrel, won by Vic Moena.

Another major addition this year was the Demonstration Gardens’ new Tree Trail, featuring tree species selected specifically for long-term success in Fort Bend County growing conditions.

“Tree Bingo was a runaway hit,” said Stacey Earley, Tree Team chair. “We gave away six trees, and countless stickers for Bingo.”

Master Gardener Larry Fleming spent much of the morning helping residents understand which trees work best in local yards, an issue that has become increasingly important as neighborhoods continue expanding across the county.

Families Take Home Seeds, Plants, and New Gardening Inspiration

Beyond the educational exhibits, many attendees left with free seeds, plants, and gardening materials to begin pollinator-friendly projects at home.

Visitors received seed packets and free zinnia seeds while also selecting pass-along plants grown and donated by Master Gardeners.

Master Gardener Sue Yoder said the free plant program was especially meaningful for residents looking to begin gardening without significant expense.

The event’s community-centered atmosphere extended throughout the gardens, where Monarch Ambassadors wearing butterfly costumes and carrying giant Monarch kites helped create a welcoming environment for families.

The celebration concluded with one of the day’s most memorable moments: the release of newly hatched butterflies into the Demonstration Gardens.

Among them was a butterfly that paused briefly on the finger of a six-year-old child before flying into the Butterfly Garden — a small but fitting ending to a day centered on connecting Fort Bend County families with nature, conservation, and one another.

Residents interested in visiting the Fort Bend County Master Gardeners Demonstration Gardens can explore the site year-round at 1402 Band Road in Rosenberg behind the Bud O’Shieles Community Center near the Fort Bend County Fairgrounds.
