Brookwood Community’s Holiday Poinsettias Bring Color, Purpose, and Joy to the Season
It’s not truly the holiday season in the Greater Houston area until Brookwood’s famous poinsettias start popping up across homes, churches, and offices. These cheerful blooms, with their rich reds, snowy whites, and festive pinks, have become a beloved tradition for thousands — but what makes them truly special is the heart behind them.
Each year, the Citizens of The Brookwood Community — adults with disabilities who live and work on the nonprofit’s Brookshire campus — grow an incredible 50,000 poinsettias as part of Brookwood’s Seasonal Poinsettia Fundraiser. But these aren’t just flowers. They’re a symbol of what happens when purpose, pride, and community come together.
Grown with Care and Purpose
Walk through Brookwood’s greenhouses during the holidays and you’ll feel it — the energy, the joy, the dedication. More than 100 Citizens help grow and care for the poinsettias, carefully tending to each plant as it grows from tiny green shoots into the vibrant blooms we all know and love.
These Citizens aren’t just working — they’re thriving. They take immense pride in producing a beautiful product, and that joy radiates from every pot.
“Our Citizens are passionate about nurturing these plants,” the Brookwood team shares. “They know their work matters — and that someone, somewhere, will walk into a room, see that poinsettia, and smile.”
And the best part? Every single purchase directly supports Brookwood’s mission to provide meaningful work and purpose-driven living for adults with disabilities.

Fundraisers, Special Orders & Christmas Eve Flowers
Whether you’re looking to decorate your home or organize a holiday fundraiser through your church, school, or club, Brookwood’s poinsettias are a meaningful — and beautiful — choice.
Special orders are welcome, and the horticulture team is happy to help you coordinate quantities and delivery dates. You can reach them directly at 281-375-2136 or hortsales@brookwoodcommunity.org to get started.
Need a little more inspiration? Consider the sweet Mexican legend of the poinsettia. In the story, a poor child wants to bring a gift to Jesus but has nothing to give — so she gathers weeds from the roadside. When she lays them at the manger, they miraculously bloom into brilliant red flowers. In Spanish, they’re called La Flor de Nochebuena — the Christmas Eve Flower. At Brookwood, that story resonates deeply.
“Our flowers are a gift of love,” the team says. “They come from people who give their best every day.”

More Than Just a Flower
While you’re there, don’t miss the Brookwood Art Gallery and curated holiday collections. From handcrafted ornaments and nativities to comfort bowls and inspirational pieces, everything is created with love and purpose. You can also shop online anytime at brookwoodstore.org.
Every purchase, whether a flower or a gift, supports Brookwood’s unique and powerful mission: to provide a life filled with opportunity, community, and purpose for adults with disabilities.
Brookwood was founded in 1985 by Yvonne Tuttle Streit, a mom who simply wanted her daughter Vicki — born with brain damage after a childhood illness — to have the chance to live a meaningful life. That mission has grown into a nationally respected model of inclusion, independence, and love. Today, more than 230 Citizens work in Brookwood’s enterprises across Brookshire, The Woodlands, and Richmond.
“People with disabilities deserve the chance to wake up every day with a purpose,” the Brookwood team explains. “And at Brookwood, that’s exactly what happens.”
So this season, pick up a poinsettia that does more than just decorate. It tells a story. It changes lives. And it reminds us all what this time of year is truly about.
Still need your Christmas Eve Flower? There’s time. Stop by Brookwood soon to grab your poinsettias and support a mission that grows so much more than plants.
