Brookwood Community's Bike to the Beach Rolling Up Soon
On October 14, the Brookwood Community in Brookshire is riding with Bike to the Beach on Galveston Island to raise money and awareness for individuals with Autism and other disabilities. If Brookwood raises at least $70,000 or more, 85% returns to Brookwood! This year marks Brookwood's fourth year raising money to increase autism awareness, with over 45 Citizen riders participating in the ride.
During Brookwood's first year participating in Bike to the Beach, ten Brookwood Citizens rode 25 miles in teams on tandem bikes with a volunteer steering. The Citizens rotated through the route with a bus following to pick up and unload the next riders. Citizen Vicki Streit started the first five miles switching off with Vicki Husfeld, Carrie Brock, Kim Morrow, Thomas Henderson, Buddy Cole, Andrew Keith, Susan Brinkman, and Josh Bixenman. It was so successful that everyone wanted to do it again, but as individual riders.
The 25-mile route was on public roads with intersections and one big causeway bridge. In order for Brookwood to continue participating, they needed a safe but fun trail. Bike to the Beach listened and developed perfect 12-mile and 6-mile courses for Brookwood that works for Citizens riding specialty bikes like side-by-side and hand-crank bikes. It takes two hours to ride the 12 miles for Brookwood's two and three-wheel bikes and the same for their 6-mile specialty bikes. All of Brookwood's riders have a one-on-one Volunteer rider alongside them for safety.
The community is invited to support the Citizens of Brookwood Community at this year's Bike to the Beach initiative. Volunteer to ride with a Citizen, or sponsor the Brookwood team with a corporate or personal sponsorship. Levels include Team T-Shirt Sponsor, Transportation Sponsor, Equipment Sponsor, and Refreshment & Aid Station Sponsor. Riders can choose from 100, 50 or 25-mile segments and individual registration fees start at $80. Learn more about Bike to the Beach at brookwoodb2b.org and get involved today.
