Bridgeland High School’s 'Confederate Letters' Advances to UIL Class 6A State One-Act Play Contest

May 13 2025

Bridgeland High School’s theatre department is headed to the big stage once again as its UIL One-Act Play production Confederate Letters advances to the 2025 UIL Class 6A State One-Act Play Competition. After a stellar performance at the Region II-6A contest on April 26 at University High School in Waco, the production was named one of the top eight Class 6A plays in the state.

This marks Bridgeland’s second appearance at the state level in three years—a feat that reflects the school’s growing reputation in the Texas high school theatre circuit.

“We are beyond thrilled to be among the top eight Class 6A plays for the second time in the past three years,” said Adam Delka, head theatre director at Bridgeland. “Achieving this accomplishment requires years of training on and off stage and it does not happen overnight.”

The emotional impact of Confederate Letters has resonated with both audiences and judges. “Confederate Letters is a heart-wrenching reminder of people’s suffering in hopes of a better life and future,” Delka explained. “Through stories like this, we can examine our history and learn from our past mistakes so that we can become better humans for our future.”

Delka credited the ensemble’s hard work and spirit throughout the competitive season. “Our students have developed an incredible work ethic along with their talent. This group has also progressed through the season with incredible determination and grit.”

Bridgeland High School will present Confederate Letters at the UIL Class 6A State One-Act Play Competition at 3 p.m. on May 21 at the Austin ISD Performing Arts Center. The school is encouraging CFISD community members to attend and support the student performers.

In addition to advancing to state, several Bridgeland students received individual recognition for their outstanding work at the regional level:

  • Walter Carmack – Best Actor
  • Zeina Montifar – All-Star Cast
  • Abigail Landry – All-Star Technician
  • Whitney Smith – Honorable Mention All-Star Cast

As anticipation builds for the state competition, the Bridgeland community is rallying behind its theatre department. “We are honored to continue telling our story with the entire state in Austin,” said Delka. “We hope to see our CFISD supporters in the audience.”
