Bridgeland & Cy-Woods Projects Selected as NASA HUNCH Finalists

Students from Bridgeland and Cypress Woods high schools had their projects selected as finalists in the NASA High School Students United with NASA to Create Hardware (HUNCH) program.

NASA HUNCH’s mission is to empower and inspire students through project-based learning where high school students learn modern skills and have the opportunity to launch their careers through the participation in the design and fabrication of real-world products for NASA. Student designs and prototypes are often used by NASA for training and in space. During the 2022-2023 school year, students from across the country worked on specific projects designated by NASA, including a lunar habitat chair, lunar rover collapsible mirror and a lunar rover dust removal appliance.

 

Bridgeland High School senior Kendon Hill, along with juniors Ryan Dollen and Austin Smith, were selected as one of five finalists for their lunar habitat table designed through the NASA HUNCH program. The Bridgeland team was invited to the NASA HUNCH Final Design Review at the Johnson Space Center where their design was reviewed by NASA engineers and astronauts.

 

The Bridgeland team consisting of senior, Kendon Hill, along with juniors Ryan Dollen and Austin Smith, designed a lunar habitat table, which was selected as one of five finalists. Hill, Dollen and Smith shared that the purpose of their design was to create a table that is durable yet light enough to travel into space. The table is fully functional and has a rounded top to decrease the risk of puncturing a hole in a lunar habitat.

 

Cypress Woods High School seniors Jennifer Bennett, left, and Ryan Rountree, right, were selected as one of eight finalists for their micro-gravity dice roller, a project designed through the NASA High School Students United with NASA to Create Hardware (HUNCH) program. Bennett and Rountree’s design would allow astronauts to roll dice in micro-gravity, which would create more games astronauts could play while in space.
 
 

The Cypress Woods team comprised of seniors Jennifer Bennett and Ryan Rountree created a micro-gravity dice roller, which was selected as one of eight finalists. Bennett and Rountree’s sphere design would allow astronauts to roll dice in micro-gravity and can handle all types of playing dice.

The Bridgeland the Cypress Woods teams were invited to the NASA HUNCH Final Design Review at the Johnson Space Center. Student designs were reviewed by NASA engineers and various astronauts in a science fair-style format.

 

Bridgeland High School junior Austin Smith signs an aluminum storage locker designed and manufactured by NASA HUNCH students. All NASA HUNCH finalists were invited to sign the locker which will be flown into space at a later date.
