Bridgeland, Cy-Fair, Cypress Woods Bands Qualify for State Contest
The Bridgeland, Cy-Fair and Cypress Woods high school marching bands will represent CFISD for the second consecutive year at the UIL State Marching Contest after being among the five ensembles selected to advance from the UIL Area I Marching Band Contest, held Oct. 21 at Katy ISD’s Legacy Stadium.
Bridgeland will make its fourth straight trip to the UIL State Marching Contest after being named the Area I Marching Contest grand champion.
“We could not be more proud of our students and we’re excited for our community,” said Shawn McAnear, Bridgeland head band director. “It is truly an honor to advance and perform among the very best band programs at the Class 6A UIL State Marching Contest for the fourth consecutive time. Go Bears!”
For Cy-Fair, the 2023 contest will mark the band’s second consecutive trip and seventh overall to San Antonio.
“We are honored to represent CFISD, Cy-Fair High School and our community at the Class 6A UIL State Marching Contest,” said John Nelson, Cy-Fair head band director. “Our students are achieving at a very high level and have earned the opportunity to compete against the best bands in the state. We are very proud to see them advance and perform in the Alamodome!”
Cypress Woods earned its fourth straight trip and fifth overall to the state contest.
“The Cypress Woods band is very excited about a fourth consecutive advancement to the UIL State Marching Band Contest,” said T.J. Peterman, Cypress Woods head band director. “The students have continued to push this season and it is great to see their hard work and commitment to excellence pay off. We are so grateful to be part of the conversation in San Antonio next week and feel honored to perform in the same arena with the very best that Texas high school marching band has to offer. We would also like to thank our administration at Cypress Woods and our community for their continued support of our program.”
All 12 CFISD bands participated in the area competition preliminaries, and Bridgeland, Cy-Fair, Cypress Ranch and Cypress Woods were among the 10 out of the 27 total ensembles chosen to advance to the area finals on Saturday night. The other finalists were Tompkins, Seven Lakes, Katy, James E. Taylor, Cinco Ranch and Jordan high schools.
Following the finals, the drum majors and color guard captains gathered on the field to hear results. As each state qualifier was read, the individuals celebrated and congratulated each other. The drum majors and color guard captains from Bridgeland, Cy-Fair and Cypress Woods joined together for photos.
“CFISD is proud to have the band programs from Bridgeland, Cy-Fair and Cypress Woods high schools representing our district on the UIL State Championship field next week in San Antonio,” said John Morrison, director of fine arts. “The students and teachers from these programs have certainly worked tirelessly towards this upcoming performance and the excellence in their performances is showing.”
The state competition for Class 6A is scheduled for Oct. 30-31 at the Alamodome in San Antonio. The preliminary round will be Oct. 30, with Cypress Woods scheduled to perform at 2 p.m., Cy-Fair slated for 3 p.m. and Bridgeland is scheduled to perform at 5:30 p.m.
The top 14 performing marching bands will return Oct. 31 for the state finals.
