Bridgeland and Cypress Ranch High Schools Advance to Area UIL One-Act Play Contest with Award-Winning Performances

April 08 2025

Two Cypress-Fairbanks ISD high schools are heading to the next stage of one of Texas’s most competitive high school theatre contests. Bridgeland High School and Cypress Ranch High School advanced to the Area UIL One-Act Play competition after placing in the top three at the Bi-District 15/16 contest, held April 2 at Magnolia High School.

Bridgeland’s compelling production of Confederate Letters and Cypress Ranch’s energetic performance of Epic Proportions impressed judges with their execution, ensemble work, and technical design—earning both schools a coveted spot in the Area competition, which will take place on April 12 at Montgomery Lake Creek High School.

“We’re proud to see our theatre students recognized for their creativity, teamwork, and dedication,” said Adam Delka, Theater Arts Director for Bridgeland High School. “Advancing to the Area UIL One-Act Play contest is a significant achievement in Texas high school theatre."

What Is the UIL One-Act Play Competition?

The UIL One-Act Play (OAP) contest is one of the most prestigious and long-standing fine arts competitions in Texas. Schools perform an 18–40 minute play within strict technical guidelines and are judged on acting, direction, set design, and overall effectiveness. Each level—zone, district, bi-district, area, and region—features the top high school theatre programs from across the state, with only the best advancing.

Competing at the Area level places Bridgeland and Cy Ranch among the top theatre programs in the region, and success there could lead to the regional and state finals.

Award Highlights from Bi-District 15/16 Contest

In addition to advancing, both schools brought home multiple individual awards, highlighting the strength of their casts and crews.

These honors reflect Bridgeland and Cy Ranch’s long-standing commitment to excellence in theatre arts. Bridgeland’s theatre department has developed a reputation for emotionally impactful performances, while Cypress Ranch is known for its dynamic staging and strong ensemble chemistry.

  • Angelica Gulapa – Test Technician

What’s Next?

Bridgeland and Cypress Ranch will take the stage again on April 12 at the Area competition, performing for a panel of judges alongside other top programs from across the region. Only a select few will move on to the UIL Region and State competitions, where the highest caliber of high school theatre in Texas is showcased.

Community members, families, and theatre supporters are encouraged to attend and cheer on the students as they bring their stories to life in this high-stakes, high-energy competition.
