Boys and Girls Country Unveils Howard Family Cottage: A New Chapter of Hope and Healing for Children and Young Adults

April 09 2024

In a significant stride towards enhancing the lives of children and young adults, Boys and Girls Country unveiled the new Howard Family Cottage on April 3. This impressive project, a testimony to community commitment and generous support, is expected to considerably enhance the organization’s ability to serve its demographic.

A host of donors and partners came together to make the project possible, notably the Howard Family, Caldwell Companies, and HomeAid Houston, along with several trade vendors. Their invaluable contributions have delivered a state-of-the-art cottage, fully equipped with energy-efficient utilities and a design that prioritizes the comfort and privacy of its occupants.

The Howard Family Cottage is much more than a house. It offers each child the luxury of their own bedroom, complete with a private bathroom and walk-in closet—a huge milestone for many of the children they serve, who are experiencing the joy of having a private space for the first time. The organization believes that such a personal haven can engender a sense of safety and stability that is vital for children who may have experienced trauma or neglect.

Founded in 1971, Boys and Girls Country is a full-service organization, providing resources tailored to meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of each child and young adult in their care. Their residential program provides a nurturing environment where children live in on-campus cottages, led by trained houseparents. They attend local public schools and are part of an independent family unit, complete with shared chores, meals, and vacations.

Contrary to many residential programs where an 18-year-old’s graduation signifies the end of support, Boys and Girls Country's commitment continues. Their College & Career program, initiated in 1997, assists young adults in taking the next step, whether it's obtaining a college degree, a technical certificate, entering the military, or starting a career. Financial support, ongoing mentorship, and a place to call home is part of their comprehensive offering.

In statement issued by Boys and Girls Country, they expressed their gratitude, noting “We are excited to see this project come to life, thanks to the faithful support of our community partners and trade vendors. We look forward to the countless memories and blessings that will unfold as we welcome a deserving cottage family to its new home.”

Through thoughtful programs and a trauma-informed approach, they aim for a significant, long-lasting impact on future generations. In 2023, Boys and Girls Country served 79 students, furnished 83,000 meals, served 15 sibling groups, and answered 500 calls for help. With the addition of the Howard Family Cottage, the organization is poised to expand its capacity and enhance these figures in the years to come.
