Books-A-Million Opening New Cypress Store in Former Party City Location Near Houston Premium Outlets

June 27 2025

A beloved national bookstore chain is bringing its literary charm to Northwest Harris County. Books-A-Million (known to readers simply as BAM!) will open a new 15,006-square-foot store in Cypress this fall after renovating a former Party City near the Houston Premium Outlets. Located at 28640 US-290 Suite XJ, Cypress, TX 77433, the project begins construction around mid-August 2025, and is scheduled for completion by early November 2025.

Backed by a $413,086 investment, the renovation includes upgraded finishes, new retail fixtures, and the addition of a break room for staff, according to an official permit filing. When complete, the large-format store will serve as a vibrant retail and community space for readers and families across Cypress neighborhoods like Fairfield, Bridgeland, Dunham Pointe, and Hockley.

Books-A-Million’s Expansion Matches Growing Demand for Physical Bookstores

Founded in Florence, Alabama in 1917, Books-A-Million has evolved into the second-largest bookstore chain in the U.S., with over 260 locations spanning 32 states and Washington, D.C. The new Cypress location will offer a wide selection of bestselling books, educational materials, bargain titles, toys, games, and specialty categories like BAM’s signature “Faithpoint” section for Christian literature and devotionals.

Many BAM! stores also include a Joe Muggs® Café, offering gourmet coffee, tea, and desserts in a cozy setting designed for quiet reading and connection—an amenity that Cypress readers are hoping to see included in this upcoming store.

With the city’s population on the rise and families seeking educational, screen-free pastimes, the demand for traditional bookstores is growing again. According to the American Booksellers Association, the number of independent and chain bookstores nationwide has steadily increased over the past five years, with consumers valuing personal interaction, curated book selections, and community-oriented spaces.

A 2024 report by NPR also highlighted how physical bookstores are thriving in the post-pandemic retail landscape, thanks to their role as “third places”—neither home nor work—where people can gather, browse, and find inspiration away from screens.

More Bookstores Coming to the Greater Houston Area

The Cypress BAM! location is part of a larger trend reshaping the region’s retail landscape. Across Greater Houston, several major bookstores are reclaiming former big-box spaces like Party City, as reported previously by My Neighborhood News:

  • Barnes & Noble is opening a new Katy location in a former Party City near Nottingham Country, a move announced earlier this year and celebrated by local families and educators. (STORY)

  • Spring, TX will also welcome a Barnes & Noble in fall 2025, repurposing another former Party City space in that growing northern suburb. (STORY)

  • Books-A-Million is expanding further into Fort Bend County, with a second new location planned for Richmond at the Shops at Bella Terra, slated to open by late summer 2025. (STORY)

These additions highlight a resurgence of brick-and-mortar book retailing in the Houston area, particularly in family-centered communities with strong educational values. High-traffic corridors like U.S. 290, I-10 in Katy, and Grand Parkway in Richmond are becoming hubs for literary retail—proof that Houstonians still cherish the experience of browsing bookshelves in person.

A National Brand with a Community Focus

Books-A-Million's reach extends beyond its storefronts. The company operates American Wholesale Book Company, Book$mart Inc., and a robust e-commerce platform, BOOKSAMILLION.COM, which has served online shoppers since 1998.

Still, it’s the in-store experience that draws loyal customers. BAM! locations often serve as informal community centers, offering book signings, storytimes, seasonal promotions, and curated reading lists. In Cypress, where family life and education are deeply rooted, the arrival of BAM! offers residents a new place to explore, learn, and connect.

As the fall opening approaches, residents can look forward to a local destination for book lovers of all ages—a space where literature meets leisure, and a growing community turns the page on its next chapter.
