Bexar County’s Hidden Revolutionary History Takes Center Stage as America’s 250th Birthday Celebration Comes to Mission County Park

As communities across the nation prepare to mark the 250th anniversary of the United States, Bexar County is highlighting a piece of local history that many residents may never have learned in school — the important role that Spanish Texans from historic Béxar played in supporting the American Revolution.

For families in Savannah Place, this year’s Independence Day celebration offers more than just fireworks and summer fun. It is also an opportunity to connect with the region’s rich heritage and better understand how local residents, ranchers, and soldiers contributed to the fight for American independence nearly 250 years ago.

Through its Bexar America250 initiative, Bexar County is working to shine a light on the contributions of Spanish Texas and the people of historic Béxar County whose support helped shape the nation’s founding.

The Story Behind Bexar America250

Created in partnership with the national America250 and Texas America250 commemorations, the Bexar America250 project was developed by the Bexar Heritage Center to uncover and share the county’s role during the American Revolution.

According to the initiative, the territory known today as Bexar County was part of the Spanish Empire during the late 1700s. At the time, the region was known as La Provincia de Texas, a frontier area of New Spain.

While many Americans are familiar with Revolutionary War battles fought along the East Coast, fewer know about the support provided by Spanish citizens and communities across Texas. Historical records show that residents of historic Béxar answered calls from King Carlos III and supported General Bernardo de Gálvez, the Spanish governor of Louisiana, through donations, cattle, supplies, and military assistance.

Those contributions helped support military campaigns against British forces and played a role in securing American independence.

The Bexar America250 project includes interactive Story Maps, educational exhibits, teacher development programs, and classroom lesson plans designed to help future generations better understand this often-overlooked chapter of Texas history.

A Community Celebration for America’s 250th Birthday

To commemorate the nation’s semiquincentennial, Bexar County is inviting residents from across the county, including families from Savannah Place, to gather for a free Independence Day celebration at Mission County Park.

The event combines patriotic festivities with family-friendly entertainment, creating an evening designed for all ages.

Beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 4, attendees can enjoy:

  • Live music
  • Food trucks
  • Bubble party activities
  • Carnival rides
  • Face painting
  • Inflatables
  • Balloon artists
  • Kids’ crafts
  • Additional family-friendly attractions

The evening will conclude with a Drone and Fireworks Show beginning at 9:15 p.m., combining modern technology and traditional Independence Day festivities in a memorable celebration of America’s 250th birthday.

Why This Matters to Bexar County Residents

For many families in Savannah Place, Independence Day traditions often center on gathering with friends, enjoying community events, and watching fireworks light up the night sky.

This year’s celebration adds another dimension by connecting those traditions to the unique history of the community residents call home.

Understanding the contributions made by Spanish Texans and early residents of historic Béxar helps tell a fuller story of America’s founding and reinforces the important role South Texas played in shaping the nation. It also provides an opportunity for younger generations to learn that significant pieces of American history happened right here in their own backyard.

As Bexar County continues commemorating America’s 250th anniversary, local leaders hope these efforts will foster pride in the region’s heritage while encouraging ongoing exploration of the people and events that helped build both Texas and the United States.
