Celebrate America 250 at The Alamo: Fourth of July Events, Living History and Family Activities in San Antonio

San Antonio / New Braunfels  /  San Antonio / New Braunfels
June 09 2026

For many San Antonio families, the Fourth of July is a time for backyard barbecues, fireworks and gathering with loved ones. This year, however, residents and visitors will also have an opportunity to celebrate America's 250th anniversary at one of the nation's most recognizable historic landmarks. On Saturday, July 4, The Alamo will host a full day of family-friendly activities that connect the nation's founding story with the history that unfolded right in the heart of San Antonio.

As both America and The Alamo reach milestone anniversaries in 2026, the celebration offers a chance for visitors to reflect on the people, events and ideals that continue to shape Texas and the United States today. While The Alamo is most closely associated with the Texas Revolution and the legendary 1836 battle, its story is deeply intertwined with the broader history of American independence and expansion.

A Fourth of July Experience Rooted in History

Throughout Independence Day, guests can enjoy free activities led by The Alamo's Living History team, who will be dressed in period clothing and sharing hands-on experiences designed for all ages. Activities will include a patriotic flag project, children's drill-and-march lessons and a battle drum program that brings historic military traditions to life.

Visitors can also watch the site's popular musket firing demonstration at 10:30 a.m. on Plaza de Valero, one of the many experiences that help transform a history lesson into something tangible and memorable.

Adding to the holiday weekend festivities, The Alamo is relaunching its popular Young Texans Tour. Designed specifically for families with children, the interactive experience offers younger visitors an opportunity to engage with Texas history through hands-on learning and storytelling.

Why The Alamo's Story Matters During America 250

Many Americans associate the nation's founding with events that took place along the East Coast, but Texas played a role in the American Revolution long before it became part of the United States. During the Revolutionary War era, Texas was under Spanish rule, and Spain supported the American cause by supplying resources, including cattle driven from Texas into Louisiana. Some of those cattle originated from Mission San Antonio de Valero, the historic mission that would later become known as The Alamo.

The connections continued decades later. Many Texans who fought in the Texas Revolution were descendants of Revolutionary War veterans and proudly referred to themselves as the "Sons of '76." Historians also note parallels between George Washington's Revolutionary War motto and William Barret Travis' famous pledge of "Victory or Death" during the Siege of the Alamo.

The relationship between Texas and the United States grew even stronger after Texas joined the Union in 1845. The U.S. Army used The Alamo as a supply depot supporting westward expansion, and during that period constructed features that helped create the iconic appearance recognized around the world today, including the church roof and the distinctive parapet arch that has become synonymous with The Alamo.

A Historic Landmark with Global Significance

The organization responsible for preserving and operating the historic site, Alamo Trust, Inc., oversees daily operations and implementation of long-term preservation efforts known as the Alamo Plan. The nonprofit manages one of Texas' most treasured landmarks, welcoming more than 1.6 million visitors annually.

Located in downtown San Antonio, The Alamo serves as both the Shrine of Texas Liberty and one of the state's most visited destinations. Its significance extends far beyond Texas. The site was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1960 and became part of Texas' only UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015, further cementing its place in both national and international history.

For San Antonio residents, the Fourth of July celebration represents more than a holiday event. It offers an opportunity to experience living history in the city where generations have preserved stories of courage, sacrifice and the pursuit of freedom.

Planning Your Visit

The Alamo will be open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 4. In addition to the special holiday programming, guests can explore the historic Alamo Church, view rare artifacts in the Alamo Exhibit, participate in guided or self-guided tours, and experience "Surrounded! The Alamo Augmented Experience."

With increased visitation expected during the holiday weekend and America's 250th anniversary celebrations, visitors are encouraged to plan ahead and arrive early.

July 4 at The Alamo

As San Antonio joins communities across the country in commemorating America's 250th anniversary, The Alamo's Fourth of July celebration offers a unique opportunity to connect local history with the larger story of the nation. For families looking for a meaningful way to celebrate Independence Day, few places provide a more fitting backdrop than the landmark that has stood at the center of Texas history for more than three centuries.
