Barbara Bush Branch Library Brings Full Month of Family Fun, Creativity and Learning to Spring Area This May

As families across Spring and Northwest Houston look for affordable ways to stay connected, entertained and engaged this spring, the Barbara Bush Branch Library is once again turning into one of the area’s busiest community gathering places.

Located at 6817 Cypresswood Drive in Spring, the Harris County Public Library branch is offering a packed calendar of free events and educational programming throughout May 2026, with activities tailored for babies, children, teens, adults and seniors alike.

From recurring storytimes and family workshops to technology classes, arts and crafts, gaming events and book clubs, the library’s May lineup reflects the growing role local libraries continue to play as community hubs for learning, creativity and social connection.

Residents in Spring and Northwest Houston searching for free family activities, teen programs near Cypresswood, senior events, sewing classes or computer workshops will find a wide variety of opportunities throughout the month.

A Community Resource Beyond Books

The Barbara Bush Branch Library serves far more than traditional library needs. In addition to its expansive collection and programming calendar, the branch includes children’s activity rooms, a teen room, meeting spaces, study rooms, a computer lab and a Family Place Learning Center.

The library also offers technology resources and services including:

  • Computer and technology classes
  • ESL learning opportunities
  • Passport services
  • Proctoring services for distance learning exams
  • Maker equipment orientations
  • Access to a Makerbot Replicator 3D printer

Visitors can also utilize in-library equipment including scanners, projectors, print stations, adaptive technology for visually impaired users and professional-grade microphones.

The branch is open:

  • Monday through Wednesday: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Thursday and Friday: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Saturday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Sunday: Closed

Weekly Storytimes and Family Favorites Return

Families with young children will find recurring weekly programming throughout May designed to encourage literacy, social interaction and early childhood development.

Regularly scheduled programs include:

  • Baby Storytime every Monday at 10:30 a.m.
  • Toddler Time every Tuesday at 10:30 a.m.
  • Pre-School Storytime every Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.
  • Family Playdate Workshop every Thursday at 9:30 a.m.
  • Tours & Tales every Thursday at 10 a.m.

Children and families can also enjoy special events throughout the month including:

  • Puppet Players Present on May 12 at 4:30 p.m.
  • Wags & Tales on May 13 at 4:30 p.m.
  • Pages N’ Popcorn on May 14 and May 28 at 5 p.m.
  • Can You Believe It!? on May 8 at 1 p.m.
  • Kaminari Thunderstudies on May 30 at 1 p.m.

The library noted that children’s events require tickets distributed 15 minutes before programs begin.

Teen and Tween Programs Offer Creativity and Connection
For teens and tweens in Spring and Northwest Houston, May’s calendar includes a strong mix of social activities, creative workshops and gaming events.

Highlighted programs include:

  • Crafty Tween Tuesday on May 4
  • Teen Trivia on May 7
  • Snack Wars on May 18
  • Draw & Chill on May 27
  • Teen Craftivity Presents: Gel Printing on May 21
  • T(w)een DnD sessions on May 6 and May 20

Creative-minded teens can also participate in:

  • Pop Out Mini Art Books
  • Gel printing workshops
  • Sewing classes
  • Introductory songwriting instruction with Bob Pryor

The library’s ongoing investment in maker programming and hands-on learning reflects a broader trend among community libraries adapting to serve students beyond traditional classroom settings.

Adults and Seniors Can Explore New Skills

Adult residents across Spring and Northwest Houston looking for enrichment opportunities will find an extensive lineup of workshops, technology classes, creative programming and social gatherings throughout May at the Barbara Bush Branch Library.

Technology-focused classes begin with Microsoft Word Level 1 on Tuesday, May 5 at 1 p.m., followed by Microsoft Excel Level 1 on Tuesday, May 12 at 1 p.m. and Microsoft PowerPoint Level 1 on Tuesday, May 19 at 1 p.m. Adults wanting to strengthen everyday digital skills can also attend Computer Basics every Thursday at 11 a.m. throughout the month.

Creative workshops and maker-focused events offer residents opportunities to explore hands-on hobbies and artistic skills. Programs include DIY: Sew an Herbal Dream Sachet on Friday, May 1 at 2 p.m., Tuesday Crafternoon Presents: Fabric Earrings on May 12 at 3 p.m., and DIY Spring Signs on May 19 at 3 p.m. Adults and teens can also participate in Sewing Simply for Beginners on May 5, May 19 and May 26 at 5:30 p.m.

Additional maker and creative programs include:

  • Cricut Orientation on Monday, May 11 at 2 p.m.
  • 3D Printer Orientation on Friday, May 8 at 3 p.m.
  • Felting on Tuesday, May 19 at 1 p.m.
  • Gel Printing on Friday, May 22 at 3 p.m.
  • Bad Art Society on Thursday, May 21 at 4 p.m.
  • Diamond Art Club on May 6 and May 20 at 3 p.m.
  • Introduction to Basic Song Writing with Bob Pryor on Wednesday, May 20 at 5 p.m.

Book lovers can connect with fellow readers through several discussion groups including the Evening Book Club on Tuesday, May 12 at 6:30 p.m., the Romance Book Club on Tuesday, May 19 at 6:30 p.m., Club de Lectura on Tuesday, May 26 at 6 p.m., and the Afternoon Book Club on Thursday, May 28 at 2 p.m.

Meanwhile, social and wellness-centered programs continue to create opportunities for connection and community engagement. Senior Game Day takes place every Wednesday at 10 a.m., while Senior Speed Friending is scheduled for Monday, May 4 at 11 a.m. Adults can also attend Speed Friending on Wednesday, May 13 at 6 p.m., Heartfulness Meditation on Tuesday, May 5 at 6 p.m., The Journaling Group on Saturday, May 16 at 2:30 p.m., and Stitch Chicks every Friday at 1 p.m.

Fiber arts enthusiasts can participate in the library’s Knit & Crochet Class on Saturday, May 16 at 3 p.m., while gardening and sustainability-minded residents may enjoy the Seed Library Society Meetup on Friday, May 15 at 2 p.m. A Local Author Panel is also scheduled for Saturday, May 16 at 11 a.m., offering readers and aspiring writers a chance to hear directly from local authors.

Many adult programs require advance registration through the Harris County Public Library event system.

Curriculum Swap Supports Local Families

One of the month’s more community-driven initiatives will be the Curriculum Swap taking place May 11-14.

The event allows families to drop off and exchange educational materials, helping homeschool families and parents recycle resources while reducing costs.

As educational expenses continue to rise, programs like these provide practical value while encouraging collaboration among local families.

Friends of the Library Bookstore Continues Supporting Programs

Residents can also support the Barbara Bush Branch Library through purchases at the Friends of the Library Bookstore, where proceeds directly enhance library programming and services for all ages.

Bookstore hours are:

  • Tuesday: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Wednesday: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Thursday: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Friday: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Saturday: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Memorial Day Closure Reminder

Library officials also reminded residents that the branch will close early at 5 p.m. on Friday, May 22, and remain closed May 23-25 in observance of Memorial Day. The library will reopen Tuesday, May 26, at 10 a.m.

For many residents across Spring and Northwest Houston, the Barbara Bush Branch Library continues to serve as more than a place to borrow books — it remains a gathering space where neighbors learn new skills, children discover reading, teens build friendships and families stay connected to their community.
