Addressing Unusual High-Water Usage: What Nottingham MUD Customers Should Know

September 04 2024

When Nottingham MUD (NCMUD) customers receive a high water bill, it’s common for them to suspect an issue with their water meter. While meter malfunctions can occur, they are relatively rare. In fact, water meters are more likely to under-read as they age rather than over-read. To ensure accuracy, NCMUD routinely replaces meters after they have recorded approximately 1,000,000 gallons of water.

If a customer notices an unusually high water bill, it’s important to investigate potential causes beyond the meter itself. Here are some common issues that might lead to increased water usage:

  1. Toilet Leaks: Slow leaks in toilet flush (flapper) valves can be nearly silent yet continuously waste water. These leaks are often undetectable without careful inspection.

  2. Seldom-Used Bathrooms: Leaks in bathrooms that are not frequently used can go unnoticed. Residents should check for any signs of water damage or moisture in these areas.

  3. Irrigation System Problems: Irrigation systems, which often run early in the morning, may have leaks due to broken pipes or damaged spray heads. These issues can lead to significant water loss without being immediately apparent.

  4. Freezing Damage: Hard freezes can cause small cracks in exposed piping, leading to drips that are not always visible. Checking outdoor pipes for signs of damage can help identify these leaks.

  5. Underground Leaks: Leaks in buried water lines, which run from the meter to the home and irrigation systems, can be difficult to detect. These leaks may not be visible on the surface but can contribute to high water usage.

Residents who encounter high water bills should consider these potential sources of water waste and address them promptly. For further assistance or if the issue remains unresolved, NCMUD is available to provide support and guidance. For more information, visit nottinghammud.com.
