Adam ES Student Raises Money, Donates to School for Playground

November 07 2022

In an act of generosity and selflessness, Adam Elementary School second grade student Shivansh Shirodkar made and sold crafts and baked goods at the Wortham Arts & Crafts Fair, and then donated $200 raised to Adam’s PTO for improvements to the campus playground.

He was honored on campus Oct. 28, receiving a certificate of appreciation from Adam Principal Carrie McCollister and PTO President Casey Dockens. His parents were also on hand to celebrate Shirodkar, while a yard sign highlighting his generous act will be on the display at the school.

“It makes you feel good to know you’re instilling the right values in your children,” said Sandhyaa Shirodkar, Shivansh’s mother. “There’s a lot of the ‘me’ culture so I think for him to think about himself and instead think about others is a big deal.”

Typically, the family has a goal or summer project to accomplish. It didn’t happen this past summer due to travel plans so making crafts for the show on Oct. 8 became the project. It expanded to not only crafts but baked goods and Sandhyaa’s award-winning chili as well.

“It was with the help and support of our community,” Sandhyaa said of the Wortham community. “Everyone came out, they were really thrilled and he raised more money than I’ve ever done selling my crafts and chili.”

When it came time to discuss where the money would go, Shivansh didn’t hesitate. He wanted to donate it to his school.

“It was my idea,” he said. “I just thought about new playground equipment. Kids like the playground so much that I thought donating money to the playground would help more kids have fun.”

Added Sandhyaa: “It’s great because those are the qualities and behaviors that you want to instill in your child.”

Shivansh presented the check to Dockens before everyone posed for photos by the playground. McCollister credits Shivansh with putting the school’s characteristic traits of “Unite, Lead and Exceed” into practice.

“When we found out that Shivansh wanted to donate to the playground, we were so excited, happy and proud all at the same time,” McCollister said. “He took those characteristics that we talk about every day and contributed to the overall beauty of our school.”
