ACC Round Rock Applied Technology Expansion Set to Welcome Students for Fall 2026
For students preparing to build careers in automotive technology and advanced manufacturing, a major new training opportunity is taking shape close to home.
Austin Community College District is nearing completion of the first phase of its Applied Technology Expansion at ACC’s Round Rock Campus, with two new workforce-training facilities expected to begin serving students during the fall 2026 semester. The project is now more than 90% complete, marking a visible step forward for a region where employers continue to need skilled technicians, manufacturing specialists and other hands-on professionals.
The expansion is about more than adding buildings to a college campus. For Round Rock and surrounding Central Texas communities, it creates additional pathways for students seeking practical training that can lead directly into the workforce — often without having to leave the area where they grew up.
New Automotive and Manufacturing Facilities Near the Finish Line
The first phase includes a new Automotive Technology Building and an Advanced Manufacturing Building. Both are on schedule to welcome students this fall, with ACC planning an official ribbon-cutting ceremony in October.
Inside the Automotive Technology Building, crews are completing painting, ceiling tiles, flooring, millwork and restroom installations. The heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system has been activated, and programming is underway for the building’s automated controls.
A final owner inspection, commonly called a punch list walkthrough, is expected in late July or early August. During that process, ACC representatives will identify any remaining items that need to be corrected before the facility is fully turned over to the college.
The Advanced Manufacturing Building is slightly further along. Its final interior finishes have been installed, and the facility is being prepared for its own late-July inspection.
Furniture, computers, instructional technology and specialized equipment are expected to begin arriving during the final week of July. The approximately three-week move-in process will start in the Advanced Manufacturing Building before shifting to the automotive facility.
For future students, that equipment will turn the completed spaces into working classrooms where lessons are tied closely to the machinery, tools and technology used in today’s workplaces.
Preparing Students for a Changing Central Texas Economy
Advanced manufacturing has become increasingly important across Central Texas as the region attracts semiconductor, electronics, robotics and technology-related employers. Automotive careers are changing as well, with modern technicians expected to understand computerized diagnostics, electronic systems and increasingly sophisticated vehicles.
ACC’s expansion provides more space for students to learn those skills through hands-on instruction rather than theory alone.
The facilities also support the college’s broader role as a bridge between education and employment. ACC serves more than 79,000 students each year and describes itself as the region’s leading trainer and retrainer for high-demand careers. Its graduates go on to work as nurses, teachers, tradespeople, accountants, business owners and other professionals throughout the Central Texas economy.
That local connection matters. Most students are not simply passing through ACC on their way somewhere else. College data have shown that a large share of graduates remain in Texas and continue contributing to the communities that helped educate them.
A 2026 economic impact report found that 68% of ACC graduates remain in the greater Austin area and that graduates earn a median income of more than $55,000 five years after completing their programs.
For families weighing the cost and time involved in career training, those outcomes help explain why expanded community college facilities can have an impact well beyond campus boundaries.
Round Rock Expansion Is Part of ACC’s 2022 Bond Program
The Round Rock Campus project is being funded through ACC’s $770 million general obligation bond, approved by district voters in the November 8, 2022, election.
Approximately 70% of participating voters supported the bond package, which includes projects across the northern, central and southern portions of the ACC District. The funding was designed to expand training capacity in fields such as health care, advanced manufacturing, skilled trades, computer science and information technology.
The bond also supports future college sites in southeast and southwest Travis County, along with expanded student services that may include child care, health services and other resources intended to help students remain enrolled and complete their education.
Rather than launching every project at once, ACC has said it took additional time to review workforce data and determine how each facility could best respond to changing community needs. Updated project timelines were then established across the district.
In Round Rock, that planning has resulted in facilities centered on applied learning and industries with a growing regional presence.
Final Outdoor Work Continues Around the Campus
Most of the exterior site work surrounding the new buildings has also been completed.
Asphalt paving and parking lot striping are finished, along with the majority of the planned outdoor improvements. Remaining work includes final landscaping, brick pavers at accessible ramps and sections of exterior fencing.
Work also has begun on the project’s second phase, which includes improvements inside the Heating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technology suite. That portion of the expansion will further strengthen the campus’s skilled-trades training options.
What Happens Next
ACC will spend the closing weeks of summer completing inspections, addressing remaining construction items and moving instructional equipment into place.
Students are expected to begin using the Automotive Technology and Advanced Manufacturing facilities during the fall 2026 semester, while the October ribbon-cutting will formally recognize the completion of Phase 1.
For residents in the Round Rock area, the opening represents a return on a voter-approved investment and another piece of the community’s continued growth. For students, it may mean something more personal: a nearby place to learn a trade, prepare for a changing industry and begin building a career without leaving Central Texas behind.
