AARP Offering Free Tax Help in Bear Creek Area

February 13 2024

AARP Tax-Aide is extending its free tax preparation services to the area. This program, supported by the AARP Foundation and the IRS, has a successful history, having filed over 850,000 tax returns in 2022 with the aid of over 25,000 volunteers.

The AARP Tax-Aide initiative targets primarily low to middle-income taxpayers but refrains from setting income limits. The services it provides include tax return preparation, electronic filing, and answering tax-related queries. Moreover, membership in AARP is not a prerequisite, and there is no minimum age requirement to avail the services.

In line with their mission, last year the program filed over 3,000 tax returns in West Houston/Katy. Powered by volunteers, all tax preparers involved in the program receive annual training and certification from the IRS.

This initiative covers a wide variety of tax returns, which includes interest, wages, dividends, capital gains/losses, unemployment compensation, pensions, and other types of retirement income and Social Security benefits. It can handle self-employment income within limits, itemized deductions, and most credits, including those tied to earned income, education, children, other dependents, child/dependent care, premium tax, and retirement savings.

The services will be conveniently available in neighborhood locations such as libraries, community centers, and senior centers. Specifically, in the Bear Creek area, AARP Tax-Aide will be operational at the Living Word Church (16607 Clay Rd.) on Mondays and Thursdays (10-2 pm), and at the Steve Radack Community Center (18650 Clay Rd.) on Saturdays (10-2 pm) until April 15.
