7 Klein ISD Elementary Students Named National Math Stars Finalists in First Year of Participation
For seven Klein ISD elementary students, a love of numbers, problem-solving and challenging questions has led to recognition on a national stage — and potentially to a decade of opportunities designed to help young mathematicians keep growing.
Klein ISD announced Aug. 17 that seven students have been named finalists for the 2026 National Math Stars program, a highly selective initiative supporting mathematically exceptional young students. More than 8,000 students applied nationwide, according to the district, making the recognition especially meaningful for the students, their families and the Klein-area schools cheering them on. It is also the first year Klein ISD has participated in the program.
“Seeing these young elementary learners recognized at the national level is a powerful reminder that achievement begins with curiosity, encouragement, and opportunity," Klein ISD Superintendent Dr. Jenny McGown said. "These students demonstrate remarkable determination and talent, and we are honored to celebrate this milestone alongside their families, teachers, and school communities. Congratulations to each of our National Math Stars finalists–we can't wait to see where your love of learning takes you next!"
Meet Klein ISD’s 2026 National Math Stars Finalists
The seven finalists represent six Klein ISD elementary schools:
Voyager Finalists
- Abraham Bui, Lemm Elementary
- Josiah Lester, Haude Elementary
- Raya Sengpaseuth, Greenwood Forest Elementary
- Bennett Pounds, Metzler Elementary
- Arhem Siddiqui, McDougle Elementary
Pathfinder Finalists
- Reed Oakes, Hassler Elementary
- Rolan Witherspoon, Hassler Elementary
The group’s achievement gives families across the Klein community another reason to celebrate local students succeeding well beyond the classroom.
What Is the National Math Stars Program?
National Math Stars is a nonprofit initiative created to identify young students with exceptional mathematical ability and provide sustained support as they progress through school. Its Voyager and Pathfinder programs are built around a long-term model rather than a one-time award, with support potentially continuing for 10 years, from elementary school through high school.
For students ultimately selected as Voyager Stars, the program is fully funded and can include weekly math mentoring, advanced coursework, family advising, STEM summer camps and other enrichment opportunities. National Math Stars says it invests more than $100,000 in support and resources for each Voyager Star over the course of the program.
The Pathfinder Stars program also provides 10 years of academic guidance and opportunities, including advanced math course recommendations, community programming and access to need-based funding for certain STEM courses and camps.
That long horizon is part of what makes the recognition significant. For an elementary student who already enjoys moving beyond grade-level math, having mentors and advanced learning opportunities available year after year can help turn an early strength into a sustained academic pathway.
A Milestone for Klein ISD Students and Schools
Klein ISD said the finalists reflect the district’s focus on creating opportunities for students to stretch academically and pursue more rigorous learning experiences.
"This recognition reinforces our district’s commitment to exceptional instruction and the high standard of instructional excellence we provide for EVERY learner," Klein ISD Director of Advanced Academics Kathleen Plott said. "Every student has the opportunity to grow, challenge themselves, 'level up,' and engage in highly rigorous, high-quality learning that empowers them to be their best."
For the individual campuses represented — Lemm Elementary, Haude Elementary, Greenwood Forest Elementary, Metzler Elementary, McDougle Elementary and Hassler Elementary — the announcement also puts a spotlight on young learners whose curiosity is already carrying them into national-level academic opportunities.
And for parents across Klein ISD, the accomplishment offers a reminder that advanced learning can begin early. A child who spends extra time working through a difficult math problem, asking how something works or searching for a different way to reach an answer may be building skills that can eventually lead to opportunities far beyond the elementary classroom.
What Happens Next for the Klein ISD National Math Stars Finalists?
Finalist status places Abraham Bui, Josiah Lester, Raya Sengpaseuth, Bennett Pounds, Arhem Siddiqui, Reed Oakes and Rolan Witherspoon among a highly competitive group of young mathematicians being considered for National Math Stars programming.
For those ultimately selected, the experience is designed to continue well beyond 2026, connecting students and their families with mentors, advanced STEM learning and a community focused on helping mathematically extraordinary students remain challenged and engaged through high school.
For now, the seven finalists have already given their schools — and the broader Klein community — an accomplishment worth celebrating.
