546 Klein ISD Students Honored at Leadership and H.E.R.O.E.S. Academy Graduations as Programs Near 6,000 Alumni Milestone
For hundreds of Klein ISD students, graduation this month marked more than the completion of a leadership program—it represented months of personal growth, mentorship, and learning how to make a positive impact both in school and in the community.
Klein ISD recently celebrated 546 students who graduated from its Leadership Academy and H.E.R.O.E.S. Academy programs during ceremonies attended by families, educators, police officers, counselors, and community supporters. The milestone included 440 graduates from the Leadership Academy and 106 graduates from the H.E.R.O.E.S. Academy.
The achievement reflects the continued reach of two programs that have become a familiar part of student development across Klein ISD. Now in its 11th year, the Leadership Academy and, in its ninth year, the H.E.R.O.E.S. Academy have collectively graduated nearly 6,000 students since their inception.
Building Leaders Through Mentorship and Connection
While academic success remains a central focus in schools, programs such as the Klein ISD Leadership Academy are designed to help students develop skills that extend beyond the classroom. Through regular meetings, discussions, activities, and mentorship opportunities, students learn leadership principles, critical thinking, communication, and decision-making skills that can serve them throughout their lives.
The program was established to foster positive relationships between Klein ISD police officers and students while providing leadership development opportunities. Officers partner closely with campus counselors to guide students through lessons and experiences aimed at building confidence, responsibility, and leadership potential.
For many participants, the value of the program comes not only from the lessons themselves but also from the relationships formed along the way.
“Every year, watching our Leadership Academy graduates cross that stage reminds me why school-based policing matters,” Klein ISD Police Chief Marlon Runnels said. “This year was extra special because my own son was among them. As a father and as a Chief, my heart was completely full. These young people give me hope, and I couldn’t be more proud of every single one of them.”
A Lasting Impact Across Klein ISD Schools
The graduation ceremonies served as a celebration of student achievement while also recognizing the broader network of support behind the programs. Campus police officers, campus guards, counselors, school leaders, and families all play a role in encouraging students throughout their leadership journeys.
District officials noted that program officers and campus guards often provide mentorship that extends well beyond weekly lessons, helping students navigate challenges, set goals, and build confidence during critical developmental years.
As Klein ISD continues to prioritize student leadership development, the growing number of graduates demonstrates the programs’ long-term impact across the district’s campuses and communities.
Community Support Helps Programs Thrive
The ceremonies also highlighted the contributions of community and corporate partners whose support helps sustain leadership opportunities for students.
Among those recognized were the Klein Education Foundation, Larry Drown with Campus Kids, World Champions Centre, the Biles family—including Ron Biles, Nellie Biles, and Olympic champion Simone Biles—as well as Marty Kuehn and the Police and Fireman’s Insurance Association.
Their continued investment has helped expand opportunities for students while reinforcing the importance of leadership development, mentorship, and community engagement.
What Happens Next
For this year's graduates, the ceremony marked the conclusion of one chapter and the beginning of another. Whether students continue developing leadership skills through academics, athletics, service organizations, or future career paths, district leaders hope the lessons learned through Leadership Academy and H.E.R.O.E.S. Academy will continue to influence their decisions and contributions for years to come.
As Klein ISD approaches the milestone of 6,000 program graduates, the continued growth of both academies reflects a shared commitment among educators, law enforcement, families, and community partners to invest in the next generation of leaders.
