Fort Bend County Launches Innovative Pet Adoption Incentive Program to Address Overcrowding and Support New Pet Owners
Fort Bend County has officially announced the launch of its New Pet Adoption Incentive Program, a resourceful initiative backed by Commissioner Andy Meyers and unanimously approved by the Fort Bend County Commissioners Court. The program, which is being facilitated by Fort Bend County Animal Services (FBCAS), is geared not only towards encouraging adoptions but also easing the burden of pet maintenance costs for new pet parents.
The inception of the program comes in the wake of a sharp decrease in the rate of pet adoptions experienced at the Fort Bend County Animal Shelter (FBCAS). According to Fort Bend County officials, this decline has led to significant overcrowding at the facility, with the shelter at times accommodating a staggering 250% over its regular capacity. Recognizing the urgent need to mitigate this overcrowding, while also remaining vigilant of the health and well-being of both the animals and shelter staff, FBCAS staff have had to make impactful decisions to regulate intake.
In order to ensure that the shelter operates within a financially responsible framework, officials have pin-pointed that the cost of keeping an animal within the shelter averages at approximately $60 per day per animal. The recently unveiled program is a strategic, yet compassionate move to address these major concerns.
Under the new program, the first 250 canine adopters and the first 75 feline adopters will be provided with a monthly bag of pet food for the first year. The adopters will also receive monthly flea and tick treatments and heartworm prevention medications. To apply for this initiative, click the button below.
