Waller County Residents Invited to Help Shape Road Safety Priorities at July 18 H-GAC Open House
Road safety decisions that could influence future improvements across Waller County will be placed directly before residents during an upcoming public meeting in Prairie View.
The Houston-Galveston Area Council and Waller County will host a Waller County Safety Action Plan open house from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, July 18, 2026, at the Waller County Community Center, located at 21274 FM 1098, Prairie View, TX 77446.
Rather than presenting residents with a finished plan, project representatives are asking community members to help rank proposed projects, identify priority locations and weigh in on strategies intended to reduce fatal and serious traffic crashes. For families who regularly travel Waller County roads, the meeting offers a chance to raise concerns about specific intersections, corridors and roadway conditions before final recommendations are adopted.
Waller County Seeks Community Input on Safety Action Plan
Waller County Judge Trey Duhon encouraged residents to attend the open-house-style meeting, where representatives from H-GAC and the county will be available to explain the project and answer questions.
“Representatives from H-GAC and the County will be present to provide an overview of the project and answer any questions you may have. Your feedback is extremely important so we hope to see you there. If you are unable to attend, I strongly encourage you to provide your insight via the project’s online survey,” said Judge Duhon.
The meeting comes as the Waller County Safety Action Plan moves through its draft recommendations stage. Community members will be asked to help prioritize targeted infrastructure projects, broader roadway countermeasures and areas where safety concerns may deserve additional attention.
Why the Waller County Road Safety Plan Matters
H-GAC is working with local agencies to develop 12 Safety Action Plans across the Houston-Galveston region. Each plan is designed to identify projects, programs and policies that can reduce traffic fatalities and serious injuries while reflecting the needs of individual communities.
The regional stakes are significant. According to project information, the Houston-Galveston area accounts for nearly 20% of traffic deaths in Texas. On an average day, two people are killed and 10 people suffer serious injuries in crashes across the region.
The Waller County Safety Action Plan brings that larger transportation safety effort closer to home. It covers roadways throughout Waller County and uses crash data, public feedback and local knowledge to identify where severe crashes occur and what improvements could help protect drivers, passengers, pedestrians, bicyclists and other roadway users.
The plan follows a “Safe System” approach, which treats traffic deaths and severe injuries as preventable. The approach also recognizes that people make mistakes and seeks to design transportation systems that reduce the likelihood that those mistakes will result in fatal or life-altering crashes.
Residents Can Review Projects and Vote on Priorities
The July 18 Waller County public meeting is expected to focus on proposed projects and safety countermeasures. Residents can review the recommendations, speak with project representatives and participate in ranking activities.

Residents may also use the project’s interactive map to identify transportation safety concerns. Additional resources include a crash dashboard and High-Injury Network map showing where serious crashes have been concentrated.
Crash history analyzed for the plan covers the years 2018 through 2024.
Planning Process Began in 2025
Work on the Waller County Safety Action Plan began with a project kickoff in May 2025, when the Safety Task Force was formed.
The task force reviewed roadway safety issues and high-crash locations in July 2025 before identifying priority locations and broader safety strategies that November. Public input was gathered from fall 2025 through spring 2026 through an interactive map and road safety priorities survey.
A first public meeting was held Feb. 24, 2026, giving residents an opportunity to review crash maps, crash types and the county’s High-Injury Network. Preliminary recommendations were then reviewed during a March 30 task force meeting.
The project is now in its second online engagement period and draft recommendations phase. Following the July 18 public meeting, the Safety Task Force is scheduled to review final recommendations in fall 2026.
What Happens Next
The completed Waller County Safety Action Plan is scheduled for finalization and adoption in November 2026.
Before that happens, public participation will help determine which proposed road safety projects and strategies receive the strongest community support. That makes the July open house more than an informational meeting; it is an opportunity for people who travel these roads every day to help shape Waller County’s future transportation priorities.
